We are currently seeking a talented individual for the position of Distribution Engineer, l, ll, Associate - Lead Associate.  The successful candidate will perform short and long-term planning to meet present and future load growth and prepare Planning memos for distribution system modifications and for capital additions to the distribution system. To provide specialized and independent work in the performance of engineering studies and data evaluations.  Provide a technical role in evaluating and recommending changes or additions to equipment construction and material standards.  Provide support in reviewing product vendors, material specifications, and designs.  Provide organization and administration of independent projects and critical standards issues for the group.

Position-Related Responsibilities

Engineer l -ll: 

  • Prepares load, contingency, and area studies to develop corporate plans for distribution system expansion and modification.
  • Prepares Planning Memoranda for new substations, substation feeder additions, system reinforcement projects and other distribution system projects.
  • Prepares recommendations for distribution projects and expenditures for blanket and specific items to be included in the annual Ten-Year Budget.
  • Oversees database maintenance necessary for carrying out Distribution Planning responsibilities.
  • Reviews Public Improvement Plans and makes recommendations for future feeder needs and possible facility abandonment.
  • Provides technical assistance to Operations, Design Build teams, and others on an as needed basis.

Associate Engineer:

  • Reviews and updates load projection estimates
  • Estimates new business load via load plans, allocates it to the appropriate distribution feeder, and updates Load Projection Database
  • System Reporting
    • Oversees the collection, input and distribution of substation field data
    • Oversees the collection, input and distribution of load profile data from meters, PLC's and relays
    • Maintains up-to-date databases and spreadsheets reflecting the Company's existing transformer, switchgear, and feeder capacities and loadings
    • Completes a monthly loading evaluation of each circuit within the distribution system
    • Completes load duration curves to determine the level of risk of each overloaded circuit and contingency 
  • Forecasting
    • Provides 20 year system forecast for Transmission Planning
    • Provides forecast for each individual circuit on a five (5) year basis
  • Financial
    • Performs budgetary and cost studies as required.  Prepare recommendation reports supporting financial results
    • Provides estimates to actuals for all projects that have been completed and trending analysis for budgetary needs
  • Performs System Analysis
    • Prepares load, contingency, and area studies to develop corporate plans for distribution system expansion and modification
    • Provide support in keeping Distribution Planning & Engineering in line with the needs of T&D Designers, Operations, and budget
    • Assist Engineers with new planning memorandums for new substations, substation equipment additions, system reinforcement projects, and other distribution system projects
  • Reviews Public Improvement Plans, System Integrity, New Business and makes recommendations for future feeder needs and possible facility abandonment
  • Reliability Reporting
    • Oversees the collection, input and completion of monthly reliability reports
    • Recommends projects to reduce SAIDI and SAIFI within the system
    • Benchmarking
  • Technology
    • Provide recommendations for automation technology within the distribution system, including advanced load loggers, switches, switchgears
    • Provide recommendations and decisions for standards issues pertaining to new technology, and are proactive in evaluating methods to reduce costs, increase reliability, and improve safety for the Company
    • Trend analysis to spot new challenges with each technology
  • Ensure that all construction and material standards information and documentation are accurate and updated in a timely manner, and provide technical assistance to personnel in the section in providing these updates
  • Provide representation and/or facilitation in any Distribution and Operation type activities, including follow up action or required updating memos, system requirements, and planning functions.
  • Report to designated Supervisor and perform various assignments as requested

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Engineer l:  Will have primary responsibility for small modification or revision projects.  Will assist more experienced Engineers in large projects.  Will assist in the review and revision of material and design standards.   Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED.  Requires a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in power related classes, and less than two (2) years professional experience in an engineering role.  Requires close supervision and detailed instruction for tasks and expected results.

Engineer ll:  Will have primary responsibility for medium sized projects and act as the project engineer/manager.  May be assigned to perform technical studies as needed.  May have several projects assigned at the same time.  Requires close supervision on new aspects of assignments.  Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED.  Requires a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in power related classes, and two (2) or more years professional experience as an Engineer l, or MSEE with an emphasis in power related classes.  Shall have a strong analytical capabilities.  

Associate Engineer:  Will have primary responsibility for small and medium sized projects, and act as the project manager. May assist other engineers in large and complex projects. May be assigned to perform technical studies as needed.  May have several projects assigned at the same time.  Will need to have the ability to communicate effectively with personnel from Engineering, Purchasing, Materials Management and all areas of T&D Operations. Will participate in and occasionally lead team and project meetings.  

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED.  Requires a minimum of five (5) years related experience at a journeyman or equivalent level in electric utility system design, construction, maintenance, or operations. Familiar with basic PC applications, electrical drawings, and basic electrical concepts.  Shall have strong analytical capabilities. Requires guidance from a Senior Associate Engineer or other more experienced engineers.

Senior Associate Engineer:  Skills of Association and will have primary responsibility for medium to large projects and act as the project manager.  Will assist in the training of other associate engineers and support personnel. Will assist in the review and revision of material and design standards.  Minimum Qualifications: Requires a minimum of three (3) years professional experience as an Associate Engineer.  Must be a self-starter and has developed good time management skills.  Required to complete all or most assignments on time. Has developed good leadership, organization and communication skills.  Requires technical guidance and supervision on non-standard project assignments. Must be proficient with basic PC applications, and with electrical drawings and concepts. Understands basic TEP budgeting policies and procedures, and is able to prioritize project assignments effectively. Able to provide on-call technical support on site for major equipment outages.

Lead Associate Engineer: Will have primary responsibility for projects of any size or complexity, and act as the project engineer/manager.  Will be assigned to perform both technical and financial studies as needed. Will need to have the ability to communicate effectively with personnel from all areas of the company, and lead or direct team meetings and discussions independently. Will investigate or study new equipment developments, and actively pursue technical alternatives to engineering problems. Conducts engineering evaluations for technical problems by employing a broad global view of the impacts, limitations, and liability associated with the proposed results. Will provide technical guidance and training to other less experienced engineers/associate engineers.   Will lead by example in effectively communicating technical ideas, providing consultation, and motivating co-workers and other team members in applying sound, logical decisions. Will serve as a technical lead in his/her area of expertise. 

Minimum Qualifications: 
Requires a minimum of seven (7) years professional experience as a Senior Associate Engineer.  Completion of technical course work in area assigned is recommended. Has achieved the highest level of technical skill and proficiency required of a Senior Associate Engineer with an emphasis on problem solving, work prioritization, and time management. Is able to work independently on most projects, and only needs guidance on unusual or complex projects. Technical knowledge, analytical skills, and economic consideration are exhibited in all assignments. Has demonstrated professional leadership in working with teams, co-workers, and external company representatives. Demonstrates a proactive approach in increasing his/her knowledge, skills and abilities.  Is able to consistently adapt to new and changing policies and work practices. Is capable of applying a diverse perspective to all technical issues, and providing complete confidence in taking ownership of technical assignments.
