Computer Systems Engineer/Analyst

Alabama Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company, is currently looking to hire a Computer Systems Engineer/Analyst for our Distribution Management Systems Department in Birmingham, Alabama.  This position provides computer software engineering and system administration support for Distribution Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Systems, Distribution Management Systems (DMS), Outage Management Systems (OMS), ORACLE based historian systems, and other Smart Grid applications. This position will be filled at a level dependent upon the skills and experience of the successful candidate.

 Job Responsibilities

  • Receive SCADA and DMS/OMS software applications from vendor and 1) distribute into test and development environments (possible having to perform build from source) for quality control and user acceptance and 2) distribute into production environments.
  • Design and implement software configuration and/or modifications of vendor delivered code.
  • Design and implement additional software to augment vendor delivered functionality.
  • Develop, document, and execute test procedures for software release.
  • Communicate with the software vendor to resolve software problems.
  • Develop utilities and tools for internal use as required.
  • Utilize problem solving skills to analyze, debug, and troubleshoot complex time and mission critical software and determine effective solutions to multifaceted problems in a timely manner.
  • Perform system engineering and administration such as operating system configuration, patch release installation, system resource monitoring, and capacity planning.
  • Interfaces with internal network engineering, planning, and other support personnel.
  • Contribute to the overall planning and work processes to support the Distribution Management System 24x7 environment.
  • Develop SQL queries, command scripts, and generate reports as required.
  • Analyze relational database requirements, developing schema design, modeling, and programming as required to meet requirements.

Job Qualification Requirements

  • Possess significant knowledge and experience with object oriented programming (such as C#, Java, Python, C++), asynchronous programming, XML, and code management utilization and administration.
  • A solid understanding of multi-threading and multi-processing programming models, and the communications and synchronization concepts of those models.
  • An understanding of device drivers, networking (TCP/IP), and file system concepts.
  • Experience with SQL programming and database administration.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • A BS degree in Engineering or Computer Science from an ABET accredited program is required.
