Description
This position is responsible for the timely and accurate communication of complicated business and operational issues to a lay audience.  Handles the day-to-day activities associated with media relations including press calls and relationship building with key journalists.  Supports and manages both the internal and external communications required by UIL business units in support of their specific strategic goals and the overall UIL mission.  Responsible to ensure the consistency and timeliness of company-wide messages.  May serve as company spokesperson on key issues. Creates and delivers communication plans within acceptable time/cost/quality criteria (including outsourcing of suppliers) and effectively manages all contingencies and interdependencies. Mentors staff as required.  Reviews and evaluates effectiveness of communication efforts; incorporates approved findings to improve subsequent activities. Participates in the development and implementation of various crisis and emergency response activities to include rotating responsibility for after-hour media inquiries. Suggests, guides and develops appropriate materials - backgrounders, position statements, issues papers, news releases and IR information - to help the media, the public and other stakeholders understand and support the Company's actions.

Requirements

Candidates must possess a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in communications, journalism, public relations or marketing.  Master’s degree is desired. Minimum of eight years direct press/media responsibility.  Excellent oral skills combined with strong written communications.  Ability to communicate effectively and able to present complex and sensitive issues in a clear, easily understood manner.  Strategic thinker and problem solver with the ability to interact with a broad cross-section of senior management, bargaining unit and other professional staff using tact and sound judgment.
