The Opportunity

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) seeks a Lead Power Engineer in Charlotte, NC, to design and develop advanced power system protection and automation equipment.

Since our incorporation in 1982, SEL has continued to grow and expand our products and services to help our customers solve their power system problems. With this continued growth, SEL has continued to invest in Research and Development, which has led to the opening of this new and exciting employment opportunity.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish relationships with customers, sales representatives, field support, Marketing, and other groups within Research and Development to learn key value drivers for target customers.
  • Design and develop microprocessor relay protection algorithms to support the value drivers.
  • Develop and maintain a detailed understanding of the assigned apparatus and related protection, monitoring and control issues.
  • Gather and maintain data on competing products.
  • Provide technical and market analysis to evaluate proposed products or enhancements.
  • Develop and analyze product specifications.
  • Develop, execute, and review functional tests.
  • Write and maintain application literature, instruction manuals, and data sheets.
  • Provide technical support to field engineers and customers.
  • Mentor other engineers and technicians.
  • Participate in power system industry technical associations.
  • Write and present papers at technical conferences.
  • Follow and improve R&D processes.
  • Lead the development of project plans, schedules, and cost estimates.
  • Assist in the development of product development road maps.
Requirements

Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science
  • Six or more years experience with electric power systems at an electrical utility, industrial plant, or engineering firm
  • Experience as a lead engineer, project engineer, or technical project manager for multi-discipline engineering projects exceeding 1000 labor hours
  • Demonstrated ability to establish project scope and plans based on established road maps and emerging issues
  • Demonstrated ability to direct the activities of a small team of engineers, technicians, and administrative staff in accordance with approved project scope and company processes
  • Strong understanding of symmetrical components, power systems analysis, and electrical systems protection
  • Excellent technical training, speaking, and writing skills
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
  • Background check results satisfactory to SEL

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with SEL products
  • Experience with electrical system protection practices
  • Product development experience
  • MBA or PMP Certification
