Description

The Engineering Technician must be able to proficiently perform all of the duties of the lower classifications. The Engineering Technician will be responsible for developing and maintaining engineering data consistent with Company standards, project guidelines, engineering procedures, accounting procedures, and other applicable rules and regulations that are or may come into effect.

Essential Functions: (As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, these include the following responsibilities, minimum job knowledge, skills, and abilities.  This is not necessarily an all-inclusive listing.)

Position-Related Responsibilities for Level I:

  • Create, develop and modify AutoCAD drawings of the electric distribution and transmission system;
  • Collect, modify and update field data used in models of the electric distribution and transmission system for analysis by others;
  • Actively seek to expand personal knowledge and skills required to accomplish position responsibilities;
  • Assist with other department functions as assigned to meet specific needs and for training purposes;
  • All of the above must be done competently on a regular basis.

Position-Related Responsibilities for Level II:

The primary responsibilities of Level II are all duties and skills required of Level I plus:

  • Collect field data required for subsequent technical electric utility design work;
  • Design service installations for residential and small commercial customers;
  • Design small (typically up to approximately 1000 feet) Primary Line Extensions in the residential and small commercial areas;
  • Design small system improvements involving pole replacements and single phase and 3-phase reconductoring;
  • Design small overhead to underground conversions;
  • Design small rebuilds and relocates;
  • Prepare cost estimates and Construction Work Orders utilizing company's standard software packages;
  • Prepare line extension and other standard customer agreements;
  • Perform field staking duties;
  • Design small residential subdivision projects ( typically 10 or fewer lots ) under the supervision of Engineering Technician III or District Engineer;
  • Perform Blue Staking duties;
  • Perform other duties as assigned;
  • All of the above must be done competently on a regular basis.

Position-Related Responsibilities for Level III:

The primary responsibilities of Level III are all duties and skills required of Level I and Level II plus:

  • Design and take to completion large commercial projects including overhead and underground line extensions and services;
  • Design and take to completion large subdivision projects;
  • Design feeder extensions, rebuilds and relocates;
  • Prepare designs of 69kV line extensions, rebuilds and relocates for review and approval by qualified internal or external engineering personnel;
  • Design system improvement projects to improve power factor and voltage regulation;
  • Design substation feeder exits;
  • Prepare Highway and Railroad Crossings and prepare exhibits for crossing permit applications for review and approval by qualified internal or external engineering personnel;
  • Prepare designs of 69kV line extensions, rebuilds and relocates for review and approval by qualified internal or external engineering personnel;
  • Assist in the planning and documentation required for Capital and O&M budget requests;
  • Provide project management, including review, oversight, scheduling and inspections, to assure project implementation is within the approved scope, schedule and budget;
  • Provide training to Engineering Technicians I and II as part of their development;
  • All of the above must be done competently on a regular basis.
Requirements
  • Satisfactory completion of high school level English Composition and Math courses including Geometry, Trigonometry and Algebra required;
  • Satisfactory completion of college level English Composition and Math courses including Geometry, Trigonometry and Algebra preferred;
  • Certificate from AutoDesk, recognized community college or recognized correspondence school demonstrating competency in use of AutoCAD software or ability to obtain same within one year of employment;
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite of products including but not limited to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, Publisher etc. or equivalent thereof required;
  • Ability to work independently and with others;
  • Ability to work in field situations including the ability to walk on unimproved surfaces to collect field data on existing electric facilities;
  • Ability to work for extended periods utilizing computer display screens and software;
  • Ability to learn and use defined procedures to collect and organize data used by others in engineering applications;
  • Must possess and maintain a valid AZ Driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities for Level II:

The knowledge, skills, and abilities of Level II are all those required of Level I plus:

  • Satisfactory completion of 2 year AAS degree, electrical technology preferred;
  • Satisfactory completion of college level English Composition and Math courses including Geometry, Trigonometry and Algebra required;
  • Certificate from AutoDesk, recognized community college or recognized correspondence school demonstrating competency in use of AutoCAD software require;
  • Working knowledge of electric utility construction standards required;
  • Working knowledge of GIS systems preferred;
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds of field data collection gear when needed;
  • Must have performed the duties of an Engineering Technician I or equivalent for a minimum period of three (3) years.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities for Level III:

The knowledge, skills, and abilities of Level III are all those required of Level I and Level II plus:

  • A working knowledge of GIS/GPS tools and equipment with the capability of applying to field situations is preferred;
  • Ability to walk on unimproved surfaces to collect field data on planned and existing electric facilities;
  • Must have performed the duties of an Engineering Technician II or equivalent for a minimum period of three (3) years.
