Description
Seeking Fleet Vehicle Technicians, with skill and knowledge levels determined through structured technical interviews. Levels available are Journeyman level Automotive Vehicle Technician, 18 month Apprenticeship Training program or 36 month Apprenticeship Training program.

  • Journeyman Level Automotive Vehicle Technician – Pay Starting at $39.46
  • 18 month Apprentice Training Program – Pay Starting at $33.15
  • 36 month Apprentice Training Program – Pay Starting at $28.41

FACTS ABOUT THE FLEET VEHICLE TECHNICIAN POSITION:

  • Uniforms are provided by CenterPoint Energy
  • Starting level is contingent on structured interview results
  • Work shift and locations will be determined by the company
  • Fleet Vehicle Technicians must purchase and maintain personal tools
  • Specialty tools will be provided by CenterPoint Energy
  • Must be willing to work at various locations and shifts
  • Expenses for all required certifications will be paid by CenterPoint Energy
  • Fleet Vehicle Technians must obtain and maintain all required certifications
    • Commercial driver license
    • Forklift certifications
    • State inspector certification
  • Fleet Vehicle Technicians are expected to perform quality maintenance and repairs timely
  • All required safety equipment will be provided by CenterPoint Energy
  • Mileage reimbursements will be paid for use of personal vehicles when performing company business
  • Two weeks paid vacation first year (Automotive Vehicle Technician only)
  • Typical work schedule is Monday thru Friday
  • Shift differential will be paid for shifts starting after 12 PM
  • Fleet Vehicle Technician is a union position governed by the IBEW Local 66           

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • If hired as an apprentice must successfully progress to the level Automotive Vehicle Technician contingent on completing all required training and assessments. Training will include written, oral and demonstration skill assessments learned through on the job and classroom training
  • Successfully perform assessments unique to CenterPoint Energy's fleet equipment (i.e. die electric, load test, pull test, leak down, stability test and diagnostics)
  • Familiarize oneself with the operation of diverse units, such as derrick diggers, single and double buckets, tow motors, cranes and construction equipment
  • Complete documentation, work orders, reports and submit them in a timely manner as instructed
  • Identify electrical wiring in order to safely perform repairs
  • Safeguard self as well as fellow workers and the public in course and scope of business by following the safety rules set forth in the Company’s Accident Prevention Manual
Requirements

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, with a minimum of two years (60 hours) of college or technical training in the automotive field

Experience:

  • Fleet maintenance experience with a minimum of two years including hydraulics and heavy equipment.
  • Military or technical training in automotive repair and maintenance may substitute for the  experience requirements.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, Licenses/Certifications, Abilities & Personal Characteristics (KSLAPs):   

  • Must successfully complete all written and/or oral job assessmemts, including a pre-employment aptitude assessment
  • Able to use a personal computer and associated software applications such as Microsoft Office and SAP
  • Able to operate company vehicles safely and in compliance with applicable laws and company policies
  • Must acquire endorsements such as Commercial Driver’s License, and DOT certification as required by management and maintain it in good standing at all times
  • Able to speak read and write in English and perform basic mathematics, interpret and communicate information regarding work orders, technical resources, timesheets, etc.
  • Able to operate Company communications equipment (i.e. radio, telephone, fax, etc.)
  • Able to read, comprehend and follow instructions for using technical diagnostic equipment for various vehicles and equipment
  • Must demonstrate safe and skillful uses of hand tools required for the job.
  • Able to operate equipment such as hydraulic presses, hose crimpers, torches, welders, plasma cutters, torque wrenches, band saws, AVR Meters, A/C Recovery machine, cranes, tire machine and tire balancers
  • Able to use pneumatic and electrical tools with limited supervision
  • Able to participate in mutual assistance outside of the Company’s normal service area
  • Able to demonstrate commitment to compliance with applicable laws and regulations, the Company’s Ethics and Compliance Code of Conduct and other Company policies and procedures and do so consistently, take all required training courses and do timely
  • Able to demonstrate respect for all individuals, adhere to the company’s values and business practices and do both consistently  

Physical Requirements:

  • Must pass a Company medical evaluation and distinguish colors, have depth perception, and have hearing correctable to hear instructions or warnings from a person stationed on/around construction equipment
  • Able to endure strenuous physical exertion and have the dexterity to utilize hand and power tools
  • Able to work in outdoor environments while exposed to heat, cold, rain, humidity, as well as exposure to other abnormal air quality issues associated with industrial areas
  • Drive various types of fleet vehicles and equipment
  • Able to lift, push, pull and lower loads manually and using blocks and rope
  • Able to walk, stand, bend, stoop, and kneel for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift and move bulky parts and tools (up to 100 lbs) approximately 10 feet, and to lift 100 lbs from floor to waist.
  • Able to reach and work overhead for long periods of time
  • Able to climb steel structures and work in aerial devices
  • Body weight must not exceed weight limit of  equipment necessary to perform tasks
  • Walk and climb to remote or limited access areas in order to repair or service equipment in all types of weather.
  • Must be able to concentrate in spite of potential dangers associated with performing fleet maintenance during the operation of various types of heavy equipment.   

Working Conditions:

  • Must maintain prompt attendance and be available for extended shifts (7 days per week and 24 hours per day)
  • May be exposed to various poisonous plants, insects, animals such as rodents and snakes
  • May be required to remain in the service area during emergency events and assumes responsibilities assigned by the company to aide in restoration efforts
