Description
The Senior Structural Engineer is responsible for the structural design of steel and concrete structures required for industrial and bulk material handling equipment and processes. This includes foundations, pits, retaining walls, structural steel buildings, platforms, trusses and towers, as well as modification to existing structures. This involves computer modeling, using software such as SACS, STRUCAD, STAAD and/or ANSYS, of structures and modules from conceptual engineering through fabrication and installation. This also includes coordinating with and directing

Job Duties:

  • Conceptual and Preliminary design, including quantity estimates related to industrial and bulk material projects; 
  • Interpreting other project sub-consultant's work, such as geotechnical and surveyors; 
  • Research and compliance with Project Design and Building Codes; 
  • Formulation of aspects of Project Design Criteria; 
  • General layouts and arrangements for structures to support process or material handling equipment; 
  • Modeling of structural systems; 
  • Member and joint geometry; 
  • Development of structural design loads; 
  • Foundation modeling using soil properties; 
  • Coordinate and direct designers and drafters in the creation of drawings; 
  • Interface with Project Managers, Engineers and clients; 
  • Assist Project Managers and design team with assembling the methodology for completing the design project effort; 
  • Review and check designs to ensure feasibility and compliance with client specifications, industry standards, applicable regulations and any other specification on a particular project; 
  • Analyze designs for efficiency of construction, use of materials, structural integrity and practicality of design; 
  • Check drawings and other documents. Verify correctness of design and engineering data to verify completeness of the documents; 
  • Develop or alter standard project specification to meet specific project requirements; 
  • Research, learn and implement differing design techniques which may be industry specific; 
  • Be familiar with and coordinate with others with respect to total project systems which would include mechanical, structural, civil and electrical components to allow considerations of those aspects into a project or area design; 
  • Review certain vendor/fabricator shop drawings; 
  • Maintain project files; 
  • Perform the necessary field work to obtain accurate information for the design; 
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Requirements

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • BS or MS in Structural or Civil Engineering; 
  • PE registration is preferred; 
  • 8 to 10 years of recent applicable experience as noted above; 
  • Knowledge and experience using structural design codes, including AISC, ACI and ASCE design guidelines; 
  • Experience supervising and/or directing the work of engineers, drafters or other engineering support staff; 
  • Availability and the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously; 
  • Availability and ability to work overtime as needed based on project, may require the ability to travel to client sites 
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills; 
  • Ability to interact with staff at all levels; 
  • Experience in multiple industries is a plus.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Interaction with other team members, as well as supervisors and client personnel. 
  • May be required to travel out of town on a periodic basis to obtain project field data or attend project meetings. 
  • Field duties may require outdoor work in a plant, facility or terminal environment. 
  • Working in plant and/or shop areas around production machinery with extreme noise levels. 
  • Must be able to wear safety equipment as required by the safety department for personal protection.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to lift and carry 20 pounds. 
  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits employee to communicate effectively. 
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time with or without reasonable accommodation. 
  • Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodations, which permits employee to conduct analysis and investigations. 
  • Sufficient manual dexterity with or without reasonable accommodation, which permit the employee to perform routine office duties. 
  • Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodations to perform office duties and travel when necessary to off-site locations.
