Brief Description
Reporting to our Clovis, New Mexico facility, the successful candidate will conduct total coliform tests on drinking water samples and perform all the QA/QC procedures required by the licensed testing method(s), report results of water quality testing, and submit invoices to the NMED. In addition, candidate will oversee both drinking water and wastewater compliance scheduling, testing, and sampling to ensure Company and government environmental regulatory requirements are met for all New Mexico water and wastewater districts and operations. Will also carry out the day-to-day operation and oversight of the laboratory, under guidance from the Phoenix based laboratory supervisor, as the sole onsite employee of the Clovis Water Laboratory.
Key Accountabilities:
- Process drinking water samples within required holding times following approved methods and in accordance with laboratory procedures including safety goals.
- Oversee drinking water, wastewater and air quality scheduling, testing and sampling to ensure Company and governmental regulatory requirements are met. Communicate directly with clients and be familiar with client contracts. Communicate with and prepare reports to and for regulatory agencies. Respond to water quality complaints and customer inquiries; take appropriate corrective action including documentation to advise management. Prepare, collect and ship/deliver drinking water and wastewater samples. Respond to data requests. Prepare reports related to water quality.
- Oversee the laboratory setting and the associated procedures, to include maintaining laboratory equipment and troubleshooting issues as necessary.
- Understand and follow all QA-QC protocols to ensure all data generated meets EPA and accrediting authority standards and laboratory licensing requirements.
- Relay total coliform/E. coli positive laboratory results to customers/NMED in a timely manner in accordance with established procedures.
- Assist in the implementation of EPCOR's Cross-Connection program, including inspection of commercial water services and backflow prevention assemblies when necessary.
Work Environment: Laboratory and outside field work - may be subject to extreme heat or extreme cold for periods of time while out in the field.

Education: Bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, or equivalent.
Certifications & Licenses: Must obtain Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certification within one year of job appointment.
Knowledge: Knowledge of water quality standards and regulations for the County, State of New Mexico, EPA and Federal Government; Company procedures and water treatment functions.
Preferred:
- 3 to 5 years of general environmental regulatory and/or laboratory experience.
- Two weeks' training at a Federal agency, State agency, or academic institution in microbiological analysis of drinking water or 80 hours of on the job training in water microbiology at a certified laboratory.
- Three months of bench experience in water, milk, or food microbiology.
- 30 days on the job training in drinking water microbiology under an experienced analyst (may be completed upon hire).
Skills: Strong quantitative skills (analytical, technical, problem solving, attention to detail). Ability to operate analytical instrumentation and/or preform microscopy and conduct related analysis. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills (e.g., tact/diplomacy, listening, negotiation, consulting). Strong planning, organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills. Proficient in MS Office Suite, LIMS, SCADA and other software as needed. Ability to work independently, prioritize work and manage time to meet deadlines. Ability to work with internal and external customers to include state agencies.
Travel Requirements: Minimal - Occasional travel to Phoenix area as well as company water and wastewater districts and New Mexico state agencies. Must hold a valid driver's license.
Physical Requirements: Frequent sitting and standing in laboratory/office/desk; frequent walking out in the field on job sites; frequent reaching, handling water samples/paperwork/files, and operating computer and other laboratory and office equipment; frequent speaking, listening, seeing; occasionally lifting up to 25 pounds.
