Description

A self-directed individual that is responsible for the planning, scheduling, coordination and completion of power plant equipment performance and emission tests. The Production Specialist possesses an advanced understanding of all test procedures, power plant processes, and the hazards of working with high pressure, temperature, and electrical voltages. Will be responsible for setup of field test instrumentation, collecting and analyzing data, as well as preparing and issuing reports for environmental regulation compliance. The individual in this position shall be capable of designing code compliant test protocols, developing equipment lists, calculation spreadsheets, communication protocols and executing these activities independent of engineering oversight. It is preferred that the individual currently hold QSTI certifications for Groups 1 through 4.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Directs, coordinates, and performs stack emission testing, boiler performance and heat balance tests, and other tests such as plant equipment acceptance tests. Ensures data integrity and performs data reduction as well as mathematical analysis of test results. Prepares and issues test reports in accordance with departmental and compliance standards.
  • Directs and performs Relative Accuracy Test Audits (RATAs) on Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMs). Responsible for reviewing and editing corresponding reports prepared by performance technicians to ensure complete, concise reporting to both state and EPA regulatory agencies. Demonstrates a thorough understanding of EPA test regulations.
  • Coordinates and installs test instrumentation and equipment at power generating facilities in the Xcel Energy fleet and other Independent Power Producing Facilities (IPPF). Coordinates with plant management to schedule test instrumentation installation prior to performing a test. Equipment installation must be conducted in a manner that does not cause any interruptions to plant operations or employee injuries. All test equipment installations must be done in accordance with applicable industry related test codes (ASME, PTC, CTI, EPA - CFR Part 60, etc.).
  • Assists with special tests or analyses, such as MATS testing, Boiler MACT testing, acceptance testing and other plant equipment testing. Properly installs the test equipment at these facilities and demonstrates a good understanding of boiler performance testing procedures and associated combustion products.
  • Provides comprehensive analysis and provides recommendations to operations and maintenance power plant personnel to enhance operating procedures and/or improve maintenance methods.
  • Directs and coordinates all test equipment repairs, calibrations, and certifications with other technicians and plant personnel. Provide expertise and comprehensive support associated with these responsibilities. Develops new methods to reduce calibration time and improve the accuracy of our calibration equipment.
  • Has the ability to lead others in the installation and removal of test equipment. Has the ability to motivate others to complete the work in a safe and effective manner. Must be able to support team efforts by emphasizing team objectives and cooperation. 
  • Responsible for identifying and purchasing new test equipment and supplies through the capital budget process and/or the operation and maintenance budget process.
  • Designs, maintains, and updates, custom computer software and/ or drivers (i.e. using Linux, UNIX, Windows or other computer-operating platforms) to facilitate or improve the communication between the field measurement instruments, data acquisition system (DAS), and test computers. Proficient with Microsoft applications including word processing, spreadsheets, and database management.
  • Performs other duties (i.e., special projects, special tests and prepares corporate documents) as assigned by management or department engineers.
Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • College level coursework and/or work experience demonstrating knowledge of standard engineering principles, practices and techniques.
  • Experience in power generation or similar industrial experience is desirable.
  • Must be able to travel extensively and work non-typical schedules.

In addition to the above, a person in this position must meet the following requirements:

  • Capable of handling physically demanding work which requires the ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs.
  • The individual could be required to perform assigned tasks in adverse weather conditions.
  • Travel to various company facilities within the Xcel fleet is expected to be up to 50% of the time. Testing performed at our power generating facilities in the Texas, Colorado, and/or Minnesota regions.
