Shell is currently seeking a Rotating Equipment Engineer to join our Discipline Engineering team at the Martinez Refinery in Martinez, CA.

The Rotating Equipment Engineer will focus on ensuring safe operation, integrity, reliability, adherence to standards, and sustainability of the electrical assets in the area supported.  They provide functional leadership, technical support, and strategic planning for a portion of the manufacturing and operating units at the Martinez Refining Company.  The Rotating Equipment administratively reports to the Electrical & Mechanical Manager and functionally reports to Production Unit Managers as well as the Electrical & Mechanical Manager.

A day in the life of a Shell Rotating Equipment Engineer: 

  • Drive the Site HSSE Goal Zero behaviors and Flagship culture, particularly in the area of Machinery Safety and Process Safety.
  • Demonstrate ownership and support of the machinery and process systems
  • Provide design quality assurance for machinery projects as the rotating equipment focal point
  • Develop turnaround work scope and support the TA Planner with robust execution plans
  • Develop detailed technical requirements and provide quality assurance for shop inspections
  • Lead machinery efforts during plant abnormal situation and recovery efforts.
  • Be a credible spokesperson, capable of delivering recommendations with clarity and conviction.
  • Develop and implement long-range plans and infrastructure projects.
  • Maintain knowledge of new technology for application in site equipment design, testing, and installations.
  • Provide leadership and training to other machinery personnel; machinist, inspectors, young engineers
  • Participate in, and at times lead causal analysis teams when machinery equipment is involved. 
  • Assure compliance with preventative maintenance philosophy
  • Provide engineering guidance to area machinery inspector(s) on repairs and machinery installations.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, company, industry codes & standards, and internal procedures.
  • Develop and drive machinery competency and training programs for the machinery community
  • Interface with other Martinez machinery engineers and inspectors as well as other discipline teams, project organizations, operations, contractors, and management.
  • Participate and work across-sites on external initiatives to improve machinery performance
  • Interface with other discipline engineers from other locations.

Requirements
  • Must have legal authorization to work in the U.S on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
  • Bachelor of Science in engineering
  • Minimum ten (10) years relevant power, petro-chemical industrial experience (or equivalent) covering all aspects of design and engineering in the rotating equipment discipline, preferably in a refinery or large industrial facility.
  • Maintenance or operations experience, preferably in petroleum refineries, chemical and/or power plant.
  • Experience in troubleshooting, analyzing and resolving complex machinery problems.
  • Utilization of problem solving techniques to resolve design & engineering issues.
  • Experience with design, specification, and procuring of machinery equipment and systems.
    • i.e. General API pumps, Special Purpose compressors, turbines, gearboxes, positive displacement equipment, auxiliary systems, various seal systems, safety critical equipment (IPF, gimple valves, vibration shutdown), motors
  • Competence in application of industry standards and practices to all aspects of rotating equipment, hydraulic systems analysis and machinery installations
  • Competent with application and understanding of relevant standards including API, PIP, ASME...
  • Experience with material engineering and machinery failure analysis
  • Experience in developing operating procedures and scoping maintenance activities for maintenance, operations, and repair centers
  • Experience with vibration and condition monitoring of special purpose equipment
  • Experience with risk assessment processes and the ability to identify threats, communicate potential impact, and build a strong case for action to mitigate the threat cost effectively
  • Ability to work effectively within a multi-discipline team environment consisting of Engineering, Projects, Maintenance, and Operations in order to manage the execution of the detailed rotating equipment engineering design work and troubleshooting.
  • Excellent English language skills (verbal and written), documentation skills, and confidence to provide firm direction to Shell and contractor staff
  • Also required is business acumen including the capacity to understand and develop budgets, business operational priorities, and project proposals.
