Description
The Senior Advisor, Health & Safety is accountable for collaboratively liaising with internal and external customers to support business units in managing operational risk and achieving strategic H&S goals. This includes developing and implementing HSE programs that help operational areas understand and control hazards, respond to incidents, comply with policies, standards, procedures and legislation, and take proactive measures to improve performance in health, safety and the environment.

Reporting to the Manager, Health & Safety, the Senior Advisor, Health & Safety is accountable for, but not limited to:

  • Advising management and employees on the implementation and administration of the EPCOR Environmental Health & Safety Management System.
  • Providing Health & Safety subject matter expertise in:
    • Work observations
    • Workplace inspections
    • Risk assessments & hazard analysis
    • Contractor management
    • Public safety & incident investigation
  • Liaising with industry partners, associations and stakeholders to anticipate potential or upcoming legislative and regulatory changes.
  • Providing interpretation and application of Health & Safety rules, regulations and legislation to management, staff and Health & Safety Committees.
  • Providing coaching and support to Health & Safety Advisors in the development and maintenance of the EPCOR Health & Safety Management System and our customer's needs.
  • Supporting the Corporate Health & Safety, Work Methods and Technical Training area.
  • Advising managers and supervisors on appropriate management practices to achieve a positive, resilient safety culture.
  • Demonstrating a high performance, high discipline, safe, accountable, focused, innovative and achievement-oriented, easy to do business with manner of working.
Requirements

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Completion of post-secondary education in Health and Safety or Environmental/Occupational Hygiene (e.g. Certificate/Diploma/Degree).
  • Maintains in good standing a designation with one or more of the following:
    • Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (CRSP)
    • Board of Certified Safety Professionals (CSP, COHST)
    • Canadian Registered Board of Occupational Hygienists (ROH or ROHT)
  • 7+ years of experience managing Health & Safety processes, programs and tools.
  • Strong understanding of Health & Safety regulatory requirements.
  • Experience conducting incident investigations, root cause analysis, and creating/delivering training materials.
  • Knowledge/experience with project management, risk analysis and the development of mitigation strategies.
  • Knowledge/experience with auditing tools.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's License (with 6 demerits or less) and the ability to qualify for an EPCOR driver's permit. If a candidate does not currently possess an EPCOR driving permit, a Driver Abstract may be required.

As the successful candidate you possess exceptional verbal and written communication skills and are able to express concepts and technical information effectively to diverse audiences. These skills enable you to effectively develop, coordinate and manage multiple requests, projects and job demands with a wide variety of key stakeholders. You are able to quickly understand and anticipate specific business drivers, influence stakeholders and participate in the development and implementation of health & safety plans, goals and objectives.

  • Jurisdiction: PROF
  • Hours of Work: 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
  • Note: Occasional travel may be required.

Please note the following information:

  • A requirement of working for EPCOR is that you are at least 18 years of age and legally entitled to work in Canada. (A copy of a valid work permit may be required.)
  • If you are considered for the position, clearance on all applicable background checks (which may include criminal, identity, educational, and/or credit) and professional reference checks is required. Some EPCOR positions require an enhanced level of background assessment, which is dictated by law.  These positions require advanced criminal record checks that must also be conducted from time to time after commencement of employment.
  • A technical/practical assessment may be administered during the selection process and this exercise will be used as a part of the selection criterion.
  • To meet the physical demands required of some positions, candidates must be in good physical condition and willing to work in all weather conditions. Clearance on pre-placement medical and drug and alcohol testing may be required.
