Description
The successful candidate will assist in the ongoing implementation of regulatory compliance and incident prevention activities relating to the health and safety of National Grid employees, contractors and the general public within a designated geography.

At the higher level, Safety Representatives will provide support to the US Business and assist management in developing incident prevention and regulatory compliance programs in order to reduce liability and improve working practices for the benefit of National Grid and the wider community.

Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Develop relationships with key internal stakeholders in order to fully explain safety policies and guide management in the development of meaningful performance improvement/action plans based on lessons learned. 
  • Monitor and assess working practices of employees and contractors in the field and on property to ensure they are compliant with safety regulations and legislation and wider National Grid policy. 
  • Assist with specialized regulatory and non-regulatory safety training courses for affected employees in order to increase overall safety awareness and reduce incident re-occurrence.
  • Execute instructions and requests and make appropriate arrangements to enhance employee safety and ensure that work is carried out in line with relevant National Grid safety policies and processes.
  • Collaborate with investigation teams post-incident to determine root causes and implement countermeasures.
  • Provide input and/or conduct projects in order to develop or update procedures and the safety rules as required. 

Additional Responsibilities for Band E:

  • Ensure National Grid employees comply with safety standards, policies and processes by training, coaching and performing safety observation tours in order to ensure a safe working environment and minimize risk for all staff within their designated geography. 
  • Produce high level and detailed business models to support senior management in developing and/or implementing work practices and programs that enhance employee safety performance. 
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with key internal stakeholders in order to share historical best practices and understand and challenge business decisions relating to workplace safety.
  • Challenge existing ways of working and guide management in developing meaningful performance improvement/action plans and lessons learned in order to drive greater efficiencies within assigned area.
  • Function as the first responder to inquiries or complaints from regulatory agencies such as OSHA in order to ensure National Grid is compliant with safety regulations.
  • Manage the day to day relationship with the business in order to understand their issues and requirements and build appropriate solutions, in line with National Grid policies and processes.
  • Co-ordinate and facilitate specialized regulatory and non-regulatory safety training courses for affected employees in order to increase overall safety awareness and reduce incident reoccurrence.
Requirements

Knowledge & Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Safety Management or related science/engineering degree or related professional industry experience or 5+ years of experience in electric and/or gas operations or related industry.
  • Basic understanding of federal, state and local safety and health laws and regulations and a specialized knowledge of electric and gas operations.*
  • Experience developing and delivering training programs or countermeasure programs 

Knowledge & Experience Required for Band E:

Band E employees are expected to have the knowledge & experience listed below.

  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Safety Management or related science/engineering degree (or related professional industry experience) or 5+ years of experience in electric and/or gas operations or related industry.
  • Basic understanding of federal, state and local safety and health laws and regulations and a specialized technical knowledge of electric and/or gas operations.
  • CSP or CUSP a plus
