Description
The VP of Engineering is a senior management professional with a technical engineering background and strong project management skills. This is a key leadership role within the company with responsibility for research and development of new products and maintaining product excellence of existing products for the electric power industry. In this role, he will be responsible for all aspects of engineering: New Product Development, Alteration of Existing Designs, Sustaining Engineering, and Product Technical Documentation and Product Validation.

Overall Responsibility

Share the responsibility of providing positive cash flow and profitability of the Company with all other employees.

New Product Development

The primary responsibility of this role is to ensure that the product development concept is effective, and that it is cost effective, product quality and schedule. In doing this, the position of a Senior Program Manager, Director of Marketing, Director of Sales, Internal Designers, Supply Chain Specialists, Director of Quality and Quality Engineers, and Manufacturing Team. Key component of this position is to supervise the acceleration of project plans, schedules, and The individual will have the responsibility of overseeing the development of products from concept to market.

This role will manage the new product concept and design efforts. It requires working with internal design engineers and ensures their team is able to

  • Research and identify program
  • Initiate and manage multiple projects at the same time
  • Collaborate closely with the Sales and Marketing Team
  • Support the development, maintenance and progress improvement of an efficient and effective product development process, project management tools and techniques, and related documents.
  • Ensure that team members understand and supply, providing assistance and training
  • Monitor, track and report on project status, key performance indicators and any changes to scope
  • Manage and report on project spending
  • Creation of presentations to help in effective communication for departmental and company information
  • Oversee creation and maintenance of product technical documentation.

The ideal candidate will take an active role in the engineering of hardware, software, firmware, mechanical engineering, algorithms, and a dedicated test to provide solutions within the power equipment industry. This person is an essential member of the senior management team, and will play a very important role in the strategic growth and tactical execution of the company's goals.

Sustaining Engineering

The VP of Engineering will also be responsible for qualifying new components for our products, maintaining the hardware and software systems. Major responsibilities include analyzing schematics of existing designs; with Root Cause Analysis; and supporting the Supply Chain team through multi-sourcing and qualification of alternate suppliers. This will require a hands-on approach to solving problems and providing technical support. This role must be able to independently research solutions and solve problems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Management of the Engineering Department & Functions
    • Plan and direct all aspects of engineering and projects
    • Functional Areas of Responsibility:
      • Electrical / Electronic Hardware Engineering
      • Mechanical Engineering
      • Firmware and Software Engineering
      • Test Lab
      • Technical Writing
    • Oversee and analysis technology trends, human resource needs, and market demands to organize and prioritize projects.
    • Maintain an excellent working knowledge of current and related technologies, including competitive and industry disruptive technologies.
    • Ensure that all engineering projects, initiatives, and processes are in conformity with the company established policies and objectives.
    • Develop and maintain project schedules
    • Utilizes best practice engineering methods and provides expert technical guidance for engineering initiatives.
    • Manage overall engineering budget and costs.
    • Manage, enhance, and advance the company's core technology portfolio.
    • Continuously identify, measure, and improve company engineering processes.
    • Maintain proper staffing levels and training to support growth of the company.
    • Manage personal activities of engineering staff in conjunction with Human Resources.
    • Create and maintain a culture of "get it right the first time"
    • Provide progress reports for all projects and ensure timely and accurate reporting.
    • Promote, identify, and implement opportunities for continuous improvement
  • Management of the new product development process.
    • Drive the development of new products that win in the marketplace and improve company financial performance.
    • Direct department activities to design new products and modify existing designs while working closely with all departments within the company.
    • Lead and oversee all new product development activities through the product development process
    • Program Definition - Participate in the preparation of functional design specifications

    • Confer with senior management, supply chain, quality, manufacturing sales, customer support, and marketing to determine the feasibility, cost effectiveness, and manufacturability of new and existing products.
    • Prioritize development activities to meet customer needs while accomplishing project objectives.
  • Modification of existing products in support of company goals and objectives.
    • Providing support for sustaining engineering activities of released products.
    • Conduct life cycle planning for product line (s), including enhancements and obsolescence.
  • Maintain an excellent working knowledge of all Beckwith Electric products.
  • Maintains all engineering documentation (ie drawings, source code, models, etc.)
  • Participate and contribute to the strategic planning process by developing long-term objectives to achieve the mission and vision.
  • Attend and participate in the IEEE committee meetings in the development of industry standards.
  • Write and present technical papers at conferences and trade shows to improve the company image.
Requirements

The VP of Engineering must have the following expertise:

  • Knowledge of product development in the area of Protective Relays and Controls for the electric power industry.
  • Familiarity with IEEE and IEC functional standards (IEEE C37.102, IEC 60255-151).
  • IEEE and IEC environmental standards for temperature / humidity, hi-pot, ESD, RFI immunity and emissions, Surge Withstand and Impulse (Example IEEE C37.90.1, IEC 60255-26).
  • MODBUS, DNP, IEC 61850 Familiarity with electric power industry.

The incumbent must be a technical visionary who has both business and technical skills, with a proven record of delivering results. They must be a master of engineering and business requirements. This article discusses the need for a comprehensive approach to market forces, with technical quality and completeness. The VP of Engineering must be satisfied with all levels of the organization, as well as with customers, in a way that is easily understood.

Required EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering, MS in Electrical Engineering or MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in electronic product development environment.
  • Experience with hardware development.
  • Experience with firmware and software development.
  • Experience with DSP algorithm development.
  • Experience with mechanical design.
  • Experience with a stage gate development process.
  • Excellent design, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of high tech electronics and firmware design.
  • Excellent knowledge of design methods, verification, and validation.
  • Excellent organizational, writing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, priority tasks, and quickly adjusts in a changing environment.
  • Team player, customer advocate, and innovative problem solver.

Desired EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE

  • MS in Engineering or MBA
  • Experience within the electric power industry.
  • Experience with process mapping and design.
