JOB SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for providing for the protection and reliable operation of the transmission & distribution systems through a thorough knowledge of three-phase power system theory, protective relays, and protective relay systems to ensure that the System Protection team applies sound engineering principles in the design, installation, and maintenance of protection and control systems.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Educational/Certification Requirements

  • BS in Electrical Engineering degree (power emphasis preferred) is required.

  • Upcoming or new graduates will also be considered.

Experience

  • previous experience in transmission or distribution power system protection is preferred

  • previous experience with electromechanical & microprocessor-based protective relays and/or control schemes preferred

  • previous field experience is desired

  • basic understanding of protective relay & utility control circuitry

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • thorough knowledge of the use of electrical test equipment

  • sufficient mathematical background to work with three-phase power, voltages, currents and phase angles

  • thorough understanding of AC and DC circuit theory

  • strong computer skills and ability to investigate & test electrical protection & control systems

  • effective troubleshooting skills

  • electrical blueprint/schematic reading

  • ability to provide on-site project direction and responsibility for workgroups reporting to others

  • thorough knowledge of three-phase power system theory, protective relays, and protective relay systems to ensure that the System Protection team applies sound engineering principles in the design, installation, and maintenance of protection and control systems

  • analytical skills necessary to solve complex technical problems of electrical power system operation

Job Responsibilities

  • provide on-site project direction and responsibility of capital & maintenance projects in order to complete them in a timely manner

  • commission new protective relaying schemes and associated equipment

  • perform periodic maintenance testing of protective relaying schemes and associated equipment

  • perform troubleshooting of protective relaying schemes

  • assist other departments in troubleshooting & repairing breaker, transformer, recloser, etc. control schemes

  • analyze protective relay scheme operations for problems and promote/complete solutions to problems found.

Additional Information

  • The successful candidate :

  • M ust be available to spend a significant amount of time in the field with overnight travel required.

  • Must be available for call-out duties and ability to respond after-hours when needed

  • Project work may require extended time away from home office.
