Farley Site Risk Informed Engineering (RIE) Engineer

Summary of Position Duties:

This position is responsible for implementing risk-informed programs and applications at Plant Farley. Southern Nuclear is an industry leader in risk-informed programs and applications and this position is critical for the development and implementation of these programs and applications at the Farley site. This position will be filled at a level commensurate with the applicant's experience and can vary from RIE Senior Engineer to site Lead Engineer.

  • Leads RIE's site involvement in the NRC Significance Determination Process, NRC inspections, emergent regulatory requests and other on-site NRC Reactor Oversight activities

  • Be a strong advocate and change agent to further the mission of the RIE department. This requires relentless communication with various stakeholders to avoid potential resistance and overcome any barriers to success.

  • Maintains the configuration risk management software (EOOS/Phoenix at-power tool and the outage defense-in-depth tool)

  • Provides oversight and support to operations and work management for assessing risk using the EOOS/Phoenix software during planning and execution

  • Provides responses to specific plant requests for risk related information and evaluations in support of maintenance rule and other risk ranking processes

  • Understands the impact of different hazards on risk (e.g., impact of fire, seismic, and flooding) and how these are modeled in Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA)

  • Provides input to the maintenance of the PRA models to ensure that the models are reasonable representations of how the plant is designed and operated

  • nfluence the organization and cultivate risk-informed decision-making by enhancing the site's knowledge and understanding through periodic training and effective communication of risk results and insights to plant management, operations, engineering, and maintenance departments.

  • It is not a requirement that the RIE Site Engineer be an expert in the PRA models; however, the candidate will be expected to exercise the models to support all of the applications, such as:

  • Performing risk evaluations for the Surveillance Frequency Control Program

  • Performing Mitigating Systems Performance Index (MSPI) updates and providing the necessary PRA inputs to the site MSPI coordinator

  • Ranking and screening of modeled operator actions for the Time Critical Operator Action program

  • Performing evaluations to support various NRC inspections and the maintenance rule. Participate in the various Expert Panels for risk informed programs.

  • Participating in the periodic Outage Risk Assessment and security target set review activities.

  • Updating risk informed evaluations following PRA model updates

  • Performing risk impact evaluations of plant changes (e.g., plant modifications, procedure changes, etc.) for various hazards

  • Perform risk assessments for NOEDs and SDPs
