About Transmission and Distribution

Southern California Edison's (SCE's) Transmission and Distribution Organizational Unit (T & D) is responsible for planning, engineering, constructing, operating, and maintaining transmission and distribution facilities throughout the 50,000-square-mile territory. T&D is the steward of roughly $19 billion in assets that safely and reliably deliver electricity to 14 million residents via SCE's 5 million customer accounts.

Position Overview:

Protection Engineering is one of the most critical organizations in SCE due to its significant technical role in preserving the safety and reliability of the SCE grid.  Protection Engineering supports the Grid Control Center (GCC) on daily system operations, including post-fault event analysis and switching sequences/procedures for in-service testing; supports field Test technicians on commissioning protective relays for new and revised relay settings; provides technical requirements for the design of new capital projects, including system expansion and infrastructure replacement projects for transmission, substation, and subtransmission systems; and provides technical expertise and deposition testimony for claims and legal proceedings.  Protection Engineering's vision is "to be an industry-recognized leader in shaping innovative protection and control solutions that facilitate the safe, reliable and affordable operation of SCE's modernized, evolving grid".

The Senior Manager of Protection Engineering provides strategic direction and day to day operational leadership, managing a group of 21 employees comprised of managers and engineers in the Eastern, Metro, and Northern Protection area teams.  This position is also responsible for implementing continuous process improvements, guiding workforce training and development, responding to complex engineering issues, and providing technical leadership in support of SCE's core business strategy.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement strategic initiatives to continuously improve the processes used to engineer and maintain the protection system for the SCE grid in order to ensure safety, efficiency, and reliability.
  • Provide day-to-day operational leadership for a team of 21 managers and engineers, which includes monitoring and forecasting the group's workload, conducting employee performance appraisals, making hiring decisions, coaching and mentoring employees, and providing work force training and development.
  • Review and approve technical analyses and recommendations from the Protection Engineering team.
  • Serve as a member of the senior management team within T&D Engineering to ensure compliance with established engineering standards or improvements to existing standards.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable NERC/WECC/CAISO standards, policies, and regulations.
  • Manage a portfolio of contract protection engineering and analytical firms performing $2 million+ of work annually.
  • Collaborate with peer managers in key partner organizations inside and outside of T&D Engineering in support of process improvement and operational excellence initiatives.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering
  • 10 years of work experience in increasingly responsible technical positions in electric utility technical related disciplines
  • 5 years of experience in managing or supervising staff or an organizational unit or 5 or more years of project management experience

Desired qualifications

  • MS in Electrical Engineering or MBA
  • Licensed Professional Engineer
  • Project Management certification
  • Industry recognized leadership role such as IEEE/EEI committee or working group leadership roles
  • Working knowledge of system protection concepts, terminology, and applications
  • Familiarity with NERC/WECC/CAISO compliance standards, policies, and regulations applicable to Protection Engineering
  • Excellent communication, collaboration and leadership skills
