Department Overview

Applied Technology Services (ATS) is a multidisciplinary team of over 100 engineers, scientists, and technicians committed to delivering practical solutions to PG&E's most challenging problems. We provide testing and analysis services throughout the Company, including Generation, Transmission & Distribution, Customer Care, and Shared Services. ATS has been providing technology-based, innovative, high-value services to the PG&E for over 35 years.

Position Summary

This position will involve several areas of work for the Performance Testing and Analysis Unit at PG&E's ATS Department in San Ramon. The work involves providing engineering analysis, testing, and evaluation of technologies related to commercial and industrial energy efficiency, distributed generation and storage, renewable energy, Smart Grid, and conventional power generation.  This position could require working in the laboratory, in the field, in power plants or other industrial facilities.

Job Responsibilities

  • Customer Energy Efficiency Programs - Primarily perform energy efficiency testing in the laboratory on advanced HVAC systems, heat pumps, boilers and other commercial and residential appliance.  The lab testing includes protocol development, test stand design and build-out, operational control and data acquisition system set-up, testing and reporting. All lab testing must be performed in accordance with our quality program and be in compliance with ISO-17025 requirements.  Also work on and manage projects and programs to determine energy savings opportunities for Industrial, Agricultural, third party programs and other customers to support PG&E's energy efficiency programs. This may involve engineering analysis, modeling, or testing of process systems and equipment to determine baseline and alternative systems performance, and review of consultant work in these areas.  In addition, this may involve assisting in ensuring ATS's compliance with quality and policy requirements, as well as budgeting and scheduling functions.
  • Emerging Technologies Testing and Evaluation - Work on and manage projects involving emerging technologies aimed at improving customer energy efficiency or for renewable energy applications. This may involve set-up and execution of lab tests, engineering analysis, and modeling to evaluate performance of these new technologies.  Testing may include laboratory or field projects.  Results are documented in technical reports.
  • Energy Storage systems, Distributed Generation and Smart Grid Related Testing & Evaluations. Work on and manage projects for evaluation of distributed generation and storage technologies, as well as Smart Grid related technologies, either in the ATS Labs or to support field demonstration projects.  This includes performance testing and evaluation of inverter technologies for photovoltaic systems, solar thermal systems, battery storage technologies, demand response technologies, and others.   
  • General Mechanical Engineering Testing and Analysis - Work on special projects requiring engineering analysis and/or testing. This typically involves thermal/hydraulic problem solving and analysis, and may include specialized testing and evaluation at PG&E facilities such as power plants, gas compressor stations, substations, or in the laboratory.
  • General - Provide leadership and mentoring to less experienced engineers in the areas described above.  Assist Unit Supervisor with other special projects for continuous improvement.
  • Safety - All employees are expected to make safety the number one criteria for every project. Ensure that all safety and compliance procedures and policies are followed, and needed improvements are identified and implemented. 

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • 7 years of mechanical or chemical engineering experience with emphasis on energy storage systems and renewable energy, thermal performance testing and analysis, and distributed generation technologies, and customer energy efficiency programs
  • B.S. in mechanical  or chemical engineering

Desired:

  • Ability to work independently, managing or performing complex projects.
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Experience with laboratory  testing and instrumentation/measurement systems, including Labview and other data acquisition equipment
  • Experience with laboratory quality assurance programs
  • Experience managing programs and/or people in the areas described above
  • Masters Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering
  • PE certification
