The role reports to the R&D Team Manager, Power Electronics and located in New Berlin, Wisconsin. As a Senior Design Engineer - Power Electronics, you will be working under the direction of the Group Leader, Power Electronics, the Senior Design Engineer, Power Electronics encompasses the design and analysis of parts, components, assemblies, subassemblies and systems and the production of associated drawings and instructions. Performs a variety of complex engineering assignments requiring in-depth knowledge of a specific engineering discipline plus an understanding of related disciplines to cost effectively achieve objectives. Assignments typically require the use of advanced and innovative techniques. Proactively seeks and implements initiatives to improve operations and increase customer satisfaction.

Your responsibilities

  • Develop the relevant R&D project deliverables, such as concept development, simulation results, electrical diagrams and board layouts, bill of materials, component purchase specifications, verification testing plans, test procedures, technical descriptions and instructions, product analysis, etc.
  • Develop, review and approve specifications for key power components, such as IGBTs, diodes, SCRs, magnetic components and other passive components.
  • Participate on cross functional teams to ensure the continuous improvement of methods, processes, productivity and quality.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce cost.
  • Participate in product standardization and product support as required.
  • Provide answers on interpretations of regulatory standards, such as UL, IEC, NEC, NEMA, etc.
  • Lead or participate in peer design reviews.
  • Act as a mentor to other power electronics engineers to address and resolve inquiries and problems and train less experienced engineers.
  • Act as the technical resource to address and resolve inquiries and problems related to drives and/or other power electronic systems.
  • Maintain technical competency and remain current in changes in the industry as well as within ABB.
  • Follow and comply with all safety and work rules and regulations. Practice and enforce strict compliance with all safety rules whenever subordinates are working on energized electrical equipment and help enforce such safety standards with others who may be involved in work on such energized equipment.
  • Maintain departmental housekeeping standards.

Your background

  • Bachelor's in electrical engineering and minimum 8 years of power electronics or related experience.
  • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Expertise in analysis and design of power conversion circuits and equipment using active power devices (IGBTs, diodes and SCRs) and passive components (Inductors, transformers, capacitors, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of various circuit topologies for AC/DC and DC/DC converters and DC/AC inverters.
  • Understand theory of operation and topology tradeoffs based on application, such as control, complexity, cost, design constraints, etc.
  • Expertise with semiconductor devices and packaging.
  • Technology awareness and industry trends.
  • Device behavior-level knowledge.
  • Ability to calculate power loss to determine temperature rise and estimate lifetime depending on modulation strategy.
  • Expertise in gate drive techniques and circuit design for use with low and high power IGBTs, MOSFETs, and SCRs.
  • Expertise with design of mixed analog and digital circuits for measurement, control, communication, protection and fault detection.
  • Expertise with dimensioning and design of low frequency magnetic components, such as AC line reactors and DC chokes.
  • Expertise with dimensioning of high frequency PCB-mounted magnetic components for switch mode power supply applications, such as flyback transformers, pulse transformers, and inductors.
  • Expertise in utility interaction of power conversion equipment regarding power factor correction, harmonic mitigation, etc.
  • Expertise in developing circuit and system-level simulation models using SPICE, PSIM, Ansys, Matlab, Mathcad, or similar software tools.
  • Knowledge of global electrical power distribution systems.
  • Knowledge of global EMC standards.
  • Expertise in EMC mitigation including conducting or guiding experiments to locate the root cause source, victim, or coupling path.
  • Experience designing products to meet regulatory safety and EMC standards.
  • Strong understanding of the regulatory testing and certification process.
  • Proficient with PADS or similar schematic capture and PCB layout software tools.
  • Utilize expertise to guide PCB layout critical component placement and routing to meet functional, thermal and EMC requirements.
  • Understands good layout design practices for both manufacturability and testability.
  • Proficient with use of laboratory test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, meters and power analyzers, function generators, frequency response analyzers, EMC test equipment, etc. for design verification.
  • Experience with design, operation, and testing of AC drives.
  • Knowledge of scalar (V/Hz) and vector motor control principles.
  • Knowledge of AC motor types, such as ASM, PMSM, SynRM.
  • Knowledge of HALT and ALT reliability testing methods.
  • Knowledge of global wiring practices and overcurrent protection devices for electrical installation.
  • Knowledge of global safety regulatory standards applicable to AC drives (UL, IEC, CSA, TÜV, etc.).
