WORK ILLUSTRATION:

Responsible for supporting all aspects of the litigation and privacy practice, including the drafting of court documents, the review of transcripts, the preparation of affidavits of documents, the collection of responses to undertakings, responding to freedom of information requests, and the completion of litigation reporting. The Law Clerk receives guidance from and provides support to the Senior Manager, Litigation & Privacy and Senior Litigation & Privacy Counsel.

The incumbent is expected to behave ethically and follow the established code of conduct, policies and internal control procedures, laws and regulations governing Toronto Hydro. 

Toronto Hydro has implemented a mandatory vaccination requirement for all its employees. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Litigation Support:

  • Responsible for the coordination and preparation of routine correspondence with internal stakeholders to collect necessary information for the handling of files, monitoring court deadlines, ensuring statutory limitation periods are not missed (specific accountabilities include: making demands for payment, preparing and issuing court documents, preparing and issuing judgments and writs, preparing witness lists, preparing affidavits of documents, reviewing transcripts, collecting and compiling responses to undertakings, processing of settlement payments).
  • Responsible for the start-to-finish process of payment of accounts, including paying bills, sending and receiving invoices, receiving payments and communicating with service providers. 
  • Collects funds on files submitted through the Motor Vehicle Access Claims Fund, including the preparation of applications for payment, drafting of court documents, and liaising with staff at the Financial Services Commission of Ontario for the effective processing of claims.

Privacy and Business Support: 

  • Responsible for providing support with all types of files carried by the litigation and privacy team, including assisting with requests from business units and administering and responding to access to information requests and other privacy queries made under relevant privacy legislation. 
  • Responsible for the preparation of monthly and quarterly reports to support litigation and privacy files.

Administrative Support:    

  • Makes recommendations on enhancements to streamline and improve departmental practices. 
  • Works closely with internal and external stakeholders to arrange and schedule meetings, including discoveries and mediations. 
  • Acts as the custodian of all litigation and privacy records and the document management database on behalf of the Litigation and Privacy team to ensure they are updated.
  • Provides other administrative support, as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Law Clerk diploma or University degree in Legal Studies or a related field.
  • Two (2) years of practical experience in a litigation environment.
  • Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario designation with a focus on litigation preferred.
  • Ability to work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the smooth progression of litigation files.
  • Highly proficient in the use of Microsoft office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience using a Document Management System such as OpenText.
  • Highly motivated, with willingness to grow.
  • Sound judgment and problem-solving skills, with the ability to respond to multiple demands, prioritize work activities and manage expectations in a fast-paced environment
