Job Description

Position Summary:

Performs various tasks related to the installation, operation and maintenance of electrical devices and control schemes associated with the automation of OG&E's electrical distribution system. Responsible for testing and commissioning new automation equipment installed in support of Smart Grid deployment. Investigate DA system misoperations and takes or recommends corrective actions to prevent similar occurrences. Troubleshoot communication and SCADA issues to insure proper operation and monitoring of distribution automation (DA) systems. Under general supervision provides lead role in safety and various activities associated with advanced distribution automation operation, control, communication and monitoring equipment. Resolves problems and develops solutions through mastery of craft, expertise, comprehensive research and principals. Follows established procedures, and develops new procedures when necessary, to safely accomplish assigned tasks on time and on budget with some latitude for deviation.

Primary Duties:

  • Members in the apprentice program perform duties related to the craft and consistent with their achieved level within the program which may include:
  • Performs a lead role in safely testing and commissioning of distribution automation (DA) systems (including electronic reclosers, switch controllers, capacitor controllers, automated fault current indicators and feeder meters) in support of Smart Grid technology deployment.
  • Installs, maintains and operates equipment associated with DA and automatic throw-over (ATO) switchgear.
  • Troubleshoots DA and ATO control schemes and communication issues to insure proper automatic operation and status monitoring.
  • Prepares and executes error-free switching for testing, maintenance, emergency repair and service restoration and operate switches in a safe and professional manner.
  • Perform various tasks associated with operation, maintenance and service restoration of the electrical distribution system.
  • Performs bench testing of DA control schemes and device operation to assess DA system operation prior to field deployment.
  • Performs acceptance testing on DA equipment and Automatic ATO switchgear prior to installation.
  • Develops and conducts training and mentoring for less experienced members on DA/ATO equipment.
  • Provides technical support to all OGE Business Units on evaluation and selection of equipment used for DA and ATO systems.
  • Maintains databases related to DA equipment location, performance, controls, software and settings.
  • Stays current on DA technologies through related training and self- study.

Requirements:

  • Associates Degree in a Technical Discipline (e.g., Electronics, Electrical Engineering Technology, Relay or Metering); or a Two year Electronics Certificate from Vocational-Technical School combined with One (1) year experience to include electronic equipment repair and testing and any combination of industrial protection/controls repair and testing experience; or (in lieu of the AA or Electronics Certificate) at least 6 college credit hours in math, 6 college credit hours in engineering and 3 college credit hours in computer science with Three (3) years directly related work experience (e.g., Electronic instrumentation/equipment repair, relay testing/programming/troubleshooting, electrical distribution system operation and maintenance); or an equivalent of Four (4) years combination of Military electronics/controls repair/programming/operation training and experience, or High School diploma.
  • Or GED equivalent combined with two (2) years of journey level experience in T&D operations.
  • Valid State Drivers License.
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with DOT certification required within 90 days.
  • Experience in the use and application of automated distribution equipment, controls, protection and communication interfaces is desired.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Computer skills with knowledge of MS Office Suite applications and SAP.
  • Ability to work independently with limited direct supervision.
  • Ability to work on multiple concurrent projects.
  • Strong knowledge of distribution systems, processes and equipment.
  • Knowledge of standards and guidelines for Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Ability to adopt and practice IIF (Incident and Injury Free) philosophy.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in speech and writing.
  • Ability to interact effectively and professionally with team members, leaders, and customers.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnosis problems associated with complex protection schemes.
  • Ability to understand and comply with company policies and operating procedures.
  • Able to obtain forklift certification.
  • Knowledge of automated distribution equipment, controls, protection and communication interfaces.
  • Working knowledge of three-phase power systems for testing and troubleshooting of control settings.
  • Ability to transfer knowledge to less experienced company members in the safe installation, operation and maintenance of automated distribution systems including working near energized facilities.
  • Ability to effectively use software for programming, testing and troubleshooting distribution automation systems.
  • Ability to effectively troubleshoot communication and SCADA interface issues and coordinate solutions with other departments.
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals, operational schematics, logic diagrams and drawings.
  • Ability to work at heights up to and exceeding thirty (30) feet.
  • Ability to lift up to fifty (50) lbs.

Working Conditions:

  • May be required to work non-standard work schedules to including overtime, weekends, holidays, and on-call rotations.
  • Required to travel throughout company offices and work sites to include overnight stays, as needed.
  • Work may involve exposure to high voltage and potentially hazardous facilities and equipment.
  • Work may be performed at elevated levels or from an aerial platform.
  • Work may be performed outdoors in adverse weather conditions with considerable exposure to heat, cold and severe storms.
  • Required to permanently reside within 30 minutes driving time to assigned service center.
  • Required to lift up to fifty (50) lbs.
  • Required to complete training (i.e. aerial device, switchman) and obtain and/or maintain required certifications (e.g., switchman, confined space, etc.).
