Position Purpose

This is in an intermediate level position for an Electrical Engineer.  Typically working under supervision, the candidate will provide project management and engineering support for more complex small and medium LG&E/KU Distribution Substation capital construction projects,  tracks project budgets and expenditures, review and update design standards and equipment specifications, support field maintenance personnel in solving non routine technical and reliability issues, complete incident investigation reports and follow up assignments. 

Required Education & Experience

Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering required.Familiarity with or ability to become proficient with Microsoft Office applications, ORACLE Applications, Cascade, Powerbase, and DrawDT and related corporate information systems.

Preferred Qualifications

Completion of coursework in power systems analysis

Job Description

  • Provide overall project and construction management of assigned capital projects, ensure projects are completed safely and efficiently, within scope and schedule and ensure adherence to safety policies and standards requirements.
  • Develop scope of work and construction cost estimates for distribution substation capital construction projects and prepare Authorizations for Investment Proposals.
  • Working with the Engineering and Design Computer Graphics team, develop construction and design drawings for substation expansion projects, procure and or coordinate procurement of materials and construction contractors.
  • Ensure completion of proper updates to asset databases including Cascade and Powerbase.
  • Complete protective relay and recloser settings and verify coordination with other protective devices.
  • Manage project budgets to ensure compliance with commitments, and explain variances and discrepancies, complete monthly variance and reforecasting on projects.
  • Maintain and update major equipment and contract service specifications, maintain and update Distribution Substation Construction and Design Standards.
  • Supports various operations and maintenance groups with engineering-based problem identification, analysis and resolution.
  • Performs root cause analysis and incident investigations for significant events and makes follow-up recommendations.  This includes field visits as required.
  • Performs all other duties and projects as assigned.

Work Conditions

Routinely works in energized electrical substations.  Routine exposures to adverse working conditions including heat, cold, dust, etc.  The field work requires frequent walking and climbing.  Routine travel throughout the KU/LG&E service area required.  Occasional overnight assignments required, emergency storm and call in support required.
