Xcel Energy is seeking a Project Manager with experience in renewable energy to support Energy Supply Projects. Xcel Energy is on an ambitious journey to be the leader in renewable energy in the United States; including our goal of being 100% carbon free by 2050. This role will be critical in the achievement of that mission.

Our ideal candidate will have most or all of the following qualifications:

  • Demonstrated successful project management knowledge, skills, and behaviors, including:
  • Excellent communication skills - written and oral
  • Familiarly with regulated utility accounting, policies, ratemaking, resource plans, and decision making.
  • Registered Professional Engineer, or ability to become registered within one year
  • Large construction contractor management experience, including as a minimum fixed price and preferred other contracting approaches
  • BS (Four year degree) in Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Nuclear, Chemical, Structural, or Construction Management from an ABET accredited university
  • Ten years of professional experience, including at least five managing large (Over $10M) complex (new power facility) projects.
  • Familiarity with large ($10M and greater) capital project development, permitting, design, procurement, construction, startup, and commissioning

During COVID-19 Pandemic this position may require the ability to temporarily work remote within the company service territory until company protocol dictates return to the office criteria has been met. Ultimately, this position will be based in Minneapolis, MN.

Telecommuting Policy: A plan has been created to officially rollout a hybrid work-from-home option that will take effect when it is safe to move forward to return to the workplace. This position will participate in this new policy.

Position Summary
Standard Operations Position. Provide end-to-end project management, leadership and coordination for multiple, large complex projects or a transformational project work stream with responsibility for project initiation, approval, scope, schedule, cost, resource planning, and risk management. Manage alignment of financial, compliance, safety, customer and operational goals between/among projects and the BU or corporation. Lead the project team to achieve all critical financial, timing, operational, and change management metrics. Ensure effective sourcing, management and engagement of all resources.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Project Planning: Identify quality project options, develop business cases, and secure required approvals. Lead requirements gathering and planning process while engaging all key stakeholders. Develop solution designs that define appropriate project scope, align with corporate strategies, ensure coordination with key initiatives, and assure dependencies are identified/addressed. Define deliverables, success metrics and key milestone schedules. Develop work plans, budgets, and cost/benefit analysis.
  • Project Management: Ensure successful delivery of committed project benefits and operational metrics in a dynamic/complex environment. Independently manage detailed project plans to approved scope/schedule and provide cross-functional tracking as needed. Define and manage a regular status reporting process to monitor progress and resolve risks to goal. Continually identify opportunities for innovation and improvement.
  • Financial Management: Function as project controller. Manage project financials including budgeting, forecasting, and actuals tracking. Facilitate RFP and contract management processes. Review actuals versus planned budget throughout project life cycle to identify variances and recommend corrective action.
  • Resource Management: Forecast, schedule, and manage resources, both internal and external. Manage assigned contracts and associated payments/performance requirements. Develop and adapt a comprehensive resource plan for a matrixed team of diverse talent to maximize skills and minimize cost. Provide training and coaching to less experienced project team members.
  • Scope & Risk Management: Manage scope change process for large transformational project or best practices for business area in addition to own projects. Identify risks and issues throughout the project and create mitigation strategies/contingency plans.
  • Relationship Management: Communicate project status to all levels of the organization. Establish effective, collaborative working relationships up to senior leader level to maximize project efficiency, responsiveness and resource allocation.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years work experience in operations, technology, finance, or comparable function; utility experience preferred
  • BS Engineering, Construction, Business, Information Technology or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 10 years' experience in project management and process improvement; project management certification preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate, train, lead and influence others, and adapt to change quickly
  • Experience with providing work direction to diverse/distributed work teams
  • Understanding of core business processes/industry trends with ability to interpret/apply ongoing changes
  • Knowledge of project planning and business need justification process and methodology
  • Vendor/contract management experience preferred

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated successful project management knowledge, skills, and behaviors, including:
    • a.    Demonstrated experience leading diverse teams from multiple business units in a matrix organization, including developing staffing plans for internal and external resources - resource management
    • b.    Detailed knowledge of integrated network scheduling concepts, including critical path, float, milestone management, status/progress tracking, fragnets, baseline, recovery plan, earned value, etc.
    • c.    Detailed knowledge and firsthand experience with cost management concepts, including budgets, GAAP related to accrual accounting, tax management, and forecasting
    • d.    Demonstrated scope management - ability to evolve scope in line with project and stakeholder expectations 
    • e.    Demonstrated commitment to proactivity lead safety planning, culture, and results.
    • f.    Positive control of task management, including skills, tools, and techniques for managing all tasks/actions on the project
    • g.    Demonstrated experience with risk management methods and tools, including insurance, legal, financial securities, etc.
    • h.    Demonstrated organizational skills - filing systems, WBS, collaboration tools, drawing/document controls, etc. 
  • Excellent communication skills - written and oral
    • a. Firsthand Experience writing detailed and summary reports weekly, monthly, and as required
    • b. Firsthand Experience preparing and delivering detailed and summary level presentations to all levels of management and stakeholders
    • c. Speaks clear, concise, and confidently in English
  • Familiarly with regulated utility accounting, policies, ratemaking, resource plans, and decision making.
  • Registered Professional Engineer, or ability to become registered within one year
  • Large construction contractor management experience, including as a minimum fixed price and preferred other contracting approaches
    • a. Experience preparing technical specifications and required bid documents coordinating with various stakeholders incorporate all comments
    • b. Experience performing detailed bid evaluations, and preparing recommendations for award to sr. leadership
    • c. Experience negotiating large dollar, high risk contracts for A/E firms, equipment supply, construction contracts, permitting and other consultants.
    • d. Experience with claim management, including dispute resolution process and coordination with inside and outside legal teams.
  • BS (Four year degree) in Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Nuclear, Chemical, Structural, or Construction Management from an ABET accredited university
  • Ten years of professional experience, including at least five managing large (Over $10M) complex (new power facility) projects.
  • Familiarity with large ($10M and greater) capital project development, permitting, design, procurement, construction, startup, and commissioning
  • Renewable Energy new build project management experience, including
    • a.    Obtaining Permitting
    • b.    Securing siting and Land Rights
    • c.    Purchasing equipment, including performing technology assessments (LCOE)
    • d.    Managing construction
  • Solid technical understanding of the technology used for renewable power plants, preferred candidate who has perform design engineering for mechanical, electrical, or civil/structural components and systems (one not all) for utility power plants.
  • Demonstrated successful leadership, mentoring, and training for subordinates
  • Experience with multiple project delivery methods
  • Certified Project Management Professional (PMP)
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement with specific examples of personally driving innovation.  
  • Ability to travel to distant jobsites (several hours from home office) and inspect equipment, systems, and personnel
  • Computer skills, including:
    • a.    Full Microsoft desktop suite, including Project, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Visio, Excel, and Access
    • b.    SAP
  • Advanced degree (Masters)
  • Familiarly with industry applicable codes, standards, regulations, including development and requests for variances/interpretations
