Primary Purpose:

Sempra's Corporate Communications Manager will play a key role bridging internal and external communication priorities by overseeing strategic employee communications and partnering to advance the company's key initiatives through a variety of internal and external channels.

The candidate will implement and evolve an internal communications strategy that educates, informs and engages employees to help drive our high-performance culture. The candidate will also contribute to external communications programs around initiatives, including, but not limited to, the company's environmental, social and governance programs; diversity & inclusion leadership; community and Foundation giving; and help drive internal and external alignment for strategic communication campaigns.

This position requires an experienced self-starter, project manager and creative storyteller who has demonstrated the ability to deliver compelling communications and smart ideas for informing and inspiring audiences across a variety of communication mediums. The candidate must have experience and a desire to foster strong relationships and collaborate with a range of internal stakeholders to develop tactics, shape messaging and build content. In the event of corporate or affiliate emergencies, the position will require 24/7 availability to provide immediate communications support. Prior experience in a large corporate, Fortune 500 or agency setting preferred. Prior energy industry experience is desired but not required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead a joint company team with representatives from operating companies to align and implement strategic internal communications that amplify vision, mission and values, and support other business objectives and/or announcements. 
    • Initiate and lead collaboration with business partners to understand needs, create strategies and implement communications in support of corporate department initiatives.
    • Be proactive and a trusted communications advisor, providing expert counsel to functional leaders and other partners across the organization.
    • Provide communications advice and counsel on internal communications, and related external amplification of key initiatives, to ensure alignment and effectiveness of communications efforts.
    • Develop and support written and verbal communications and talking points on behalf of senior executives to internal and external audiences on a range of company topics, and support participation in external events or conferences and interviews
  • Oversee production of timely, engaging content such as email announcements, newsletters and presentations across internal communications channels, highlighting the company's people, priorities and culture. 
    • Collaboratively identify compelling stories and create written and digital content that effectively communicates the company's activities.
    • Support writing and distribution of relevant news releases and other external collateral.
  • Develop metrics to effectively monitor the impact of communications programs, campaigns and events. 
    • Develop, launch and manage tools and processes to ensure communications and engagement initiatives are aligned with Sempra's brand identity and successfully delivered via appropriate communications channels.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or related field required.

Experience:

  • 7-10 years of corporate communications experience with an emphasis on internal communications, employee engagement, executive communications, culture or other relevant areas. Experience in sustainability, ESG or D&I programs desired.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Exceptional editorial planning and writing, storytelling and editing skills; able to produce a high volume of timely, relevant and compelling content.
  • Experience partnering with and providing counsel to senior leaders or company executives, helping to define and capture voice, tone and translating vision through multiple communication vehicles.
  • Experience supporting senior leader or company executive participation in internal and external events and interviews, including virtual and in-person appearances.
  • Ability to shape the internal and external communications narrative and effectively communicate via a range of mediums, including presentations, scripts or emails, without significant editing.
  • Strong exposure or involvement in creative and design process with ability to guide multimedia professionals and consultants in development and delivery of relevant internal and external collateral.
  • Leads by example and is able to work effectively across many functions to influence, manage, and drive communications narratives and employee engagement actions across the organization.
  • Experience successfully managing through ambiguity and adapting to changing priorities.
  • Experience in strategic thinking and ability to develop and implement "fit-for-purpose" communications plans.
  • Able to quickly comprehend and communicate important company messages and milestones.
  • Cultivate a deep understanding of internal communications best practices, including tools, channels and engagement strategies.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite of software, including Microsoft SharePoint, PowerPoint, Teams and Outlook and knowledge of graphic design software and capabilities.
  • Able to maintain the highest level of discretion and confidentiality.
  • Must possess a positive attitude.
