ABOUT THE ROLE

The IT Business Analyst is a key facilitator within IT, acting as a bridge between the business unit affected, organizational stakeholders, and the solution team. The key accountability of the BA is to apply their knowledge to examine the business need and ensure a timely and effective solution is provided to satisfy that need. The IT Business Analyst will use their knowledge of the business and the solution domain (e.g. technology, process improvement, change management, etc.) to become an advocate for the business unit and ensure the need is valid, understood, and met. This begins with identifying the needs of their clients and stakeholders and continue with developing the requirements and managing them throughout the process of delivering what is needed to meet the business need.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Collaborate with SMEs (the business sponsor, business representative, and IT management) to collect the relevant information and document the business opportunity for the sponsor to propose a new project.

  • Collaborate with both the business and IT Project Manager in the development of Project Charters, Business Cases and Authorization for Expenditures (AFE). The deliverables may include but are not limited to conceptual business process design specifications, business / functional requirement documents, use cases and process models.

  • Work closely with the business users to model the current and future state of business process utilizing TransAlta's standard process modeling methodology.

  • Analyze business problems, identify and document system processes and deficiencies, and recommend solutions to meet the needs of the business as well as organizational goals.

  • Collaborate with the Business stakeholders in defining business requirements and work with IT stakeholders to specify/design, develop and implement appropriate business solutions.

  • Explain/demonstrate business requirements/specifications to IT development team and Enterprise architect.

  • Develop new or improve existing business processes

  • Provide business process analysis, mapping and re-design support for key business process improvement initiatives.

  • Research, evaluate and recommend software solutions for improving financial planning analysis needs and processes

  • Project manage sourcing and evaluation process across multiple stakeholders

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possess a bachelor's degree or diploma in Computer Science, Business, Commerce or directly related experience.  

  • 3-5 years of relevant business experience

  • 3-5 years experience with Financial Planning, forecasting and reporting systems

  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written), and problem-solving skills

  • Strong training, facilitation and communication skills to support business process mapping activities and dissemination of business process practices to the organization

  • Experience in delivering business process improvements and in developing new processes

  • A broad understanding of ERP (SAP preferred), applications and services to be able to translate business requirements into technical solutions.

  • Experience in developing business requirements and business case analytics for financial planning system investments/expenditures

  • Experience in sourcing, evaluating and developing recommendations for financial planning software and systems to improve overall business productivity

  • Able to evaluate technical and software solutions to establish if the business requirements and needs will be satisfied.

  • Able to understand the impact of IT changes on business processes and translate them into an effective change management program

  • The ability to study and analyze complex business problems, document the business requirements, risks, alternatives and present these to both business and IT resources in a clear, concise manner.

  • Project management skills for creating a collaborative process to evaluate and develop recommendations for IT solutions/investments together with IT, finance, and procurement teams
