Position Purpose
Reporting directly to the General Counsel, this position supports all aspects of planning, coordinating, and executing TVA's legal work. Provides guidance to General Counsel and to senior executives in coordination with the General Counsel regarding legal strategies, risks and likely outcomes. Responsible for administration of the legal office.

Budget Responsibility Up to approximately $5 million
Principal Accountabilities
- Supports the General Counsel in providing legal counsel to management at all levels of the company on company strategies and their implementation. Executes special projects as needed.
- Oversee and manage other attorneys who may range from staff attorney to Senior Manager and Senior Counsel, and advises on the hiring and training of the in-house legal staff as well as procurement and management of external counsel.
- Accountable for managing (and continuously improving) the systems and teams necessary to intake and assess a broad range of legal matters, prioritize those matters based on risk and value, allocate in-house and external resources accordingly, and manage those matters and resources to optimize the outcomes for TVA.
- Responsible for administration of the legal office including advising the General Counsel on organizational matters (personnel, budget, technology, and strategic planning) and implementing initiatives. Coaches and counsels attorneys to promote employee development and professional growth. Supervises attorneys' interactions with TVA business units.
- One of a few legal Directors with broad responsibility for diverse matters and issues cross multiple practice disciplines. For example:
- Commercial (Procurement, Land Transactions, and Contracting)
- Regulatory (Nuclear Licensing, Ratemaking & LPC Regulation, and Environmental Law)
- Employment (All Advice and Representation Related to Employment Law, from Discrimination to Whistleblowers and Labor Relations)
- Litigation (Tort, Regulatory, Commercial, and Condemnation lawsuits)
- May serve as secretary to a TVA Board Committee, as assigned by the General Counsel
Serves as principal advisor to the General Counsel in the direction and management of all phases of OGC programs and work when the General Counsel is present, and may act on the General Counsel's behalf during the General Counsel's temporary absences.
Minimum Requirements
Education The position requires a law degree.
Experience At least 15 years of relevant legal experience, including significant experience as a leader of people and teams.
Certification/License, etc An active license to practice law in at least one state or the District of Columbia.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Must have excellent legal and analytical skills and initiative in pursuing legal strategies. The ability to communicate effectively with all levels of TVA management and with external stakeholders. Comprehensive knowledge of planning, development, and administering complex program and support activities. Extensive knowledge of applicable law and TVA's goals, objectives, business operations, and organizational structure is required. Demonstrated TVA's managerial competencies. Strong people skills and ability to work with diverse groups and different technical skills and backgrounds is required. Candidate may be required to obtain and maintain a security clearance based on position/access requirements and essential job functions.
