An opportunity currently exists for an Electrical Engineer within AltaLink's Protection and Control Engineering team. Reporting to the Manager, P&C, SCADA & Telecom Engineering, the successful candidate will work with internal and external technical staff to ensure that all additions and modifications to AltaLink's transmission assets meet quality standards from a protection and control perspective. As such, this individual will provide technical leadership at all critical project phases -- from planning through to implementation and final acceptance.
This position will appeal to individuals with a utility Protection and Control Engineering background who are looking for an opportunity to develop their engineering and leadership talents in a dynamic utility environment.
Key Accountabilities:
Under the supervision of the Manager, P&C, SCADA & Telecom Engineering team and the technical direction of the Principal Engineer, Protection and Control, this individual will be accountable for all or in part of the following:
Design Protection Settings for AltaLink's new and existing Transmission System;
Provide timely and effective protection & control technical input into conceptual engineering, project scoping & estimating, and project execution processes as they pertain to AltaLink's transmission assets;
Provide technical direction and answer EPCM contractors' questions to ensure each project meets acceptable standards for operability, functionality, maintainability, reliability, durability and safety;
Help create timely and accurate Project Scoping Documents that provide sufficient detail to allow accurate estimating and clear direction to the Engineering contractor;
Review protection & control design and settings;
Maintain timely and effective communication with the appropriate internal and external personnel in support of each of these processes; and
Maintain effective working relationships with suppliers, partners and internal clients that result in growing understanding, good decisions, and effective cooperation.
Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications for this position are as follows:
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering;
Engineer In Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer registered with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) or qualifies for registration with APEGA;
Minimum of 2 to 5 years of relevant experience;
Proven ability / experience in the above noted responsibilities;
Familiar with Protection and Control philosophies, schemes, and standards;
Formal Protection and Control training would be an asset;
Working knowledge of MathCAD, Microsoft Office, Aspen Oneliner and CAPE;
Excellent knowledge of modern digital protective relays in utility applications and experience calculating relay settings;
Technical knowledge and understanding of electric transmission system operation, maintenance, performance, power equipment and substation design;
Knowledge of applicable standards such as CSA, ANSI, IEC and IEEE standards;
Familiarity with local area networks, communication schemes, platforms and protocols used to provide local and remote interrogation with substation relays, meters, fault recorders and other intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) would be an asset;
Knowledge of IEC61850 will be an asset;
Familiarity with Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) rules will be an asset;
Strong verbal and written (reporting, graphical) communication skills with ability to work in a team environment and positively influence others;
Effective interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive customer outcomes;
Comfortable working in a dynamic changing environment with multiple, occasionally conflicting, priorities;
Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage a wide variety of issues on multiple projects simultaneously; and
Proven track record of good attendance and performance.
