NOTE: This is a 2 year term position
An opportunity currently exists for a Telecom Design Engineer with the Engineering team within the Project Development Department of AltaLink, reporting to the Manager, P&C, SCADA & Telecom Engineering. The successful candidate will work with internal & external technical staff to ensure that telecom facilities are appropriately designed and integrated into existing facilities. This individual will provide technical leadership at all critical project phases - from budgeting, planning, implementation, through to final acceptance. This position will appeal to individuals with telecom design experience in high voltage substation or telecom sites and project engineering skills who are looking for an opportunity to develop their engineering and leadership talents in a dynamic utility environment.
Key Accountabilities:
Under the supervision of the Manager, P&C, SCADA & Telecom Engineering team, this individual will be accountable for all or in part of the following:
Scoping and design of telecommunication facilities for capital projects;
Provide timely and effective telecommunication technical input to support project scoping, and project execution. This will include creating project scope descriptions that provide sufficient detail to allow accurate estimating and clear direction to external engineering and construction contractors;
Review technical drawings & specifications submitted by contractors to ensure each project meets acceptable standards for operability, functionality, maintainability, reliability, durability, and safety;
Stamp and sign engineered drawings as required;
Support construction activities by providing timely direction and responses to field crews' queries;
Obtain, manage, and maintain effective working relationships with suppliers, external technical and construction resources, and internal clients that result in growing understanding, good decisions and effective cooperation;
Manage engineering cost, quality, schedule, and safety for multiple telecom projects as required;
Report project engineering status, costs, and schedule status to internal customers, stakeholders, and senior management as required; and
Maintain competency with current industry standards and regulatory groups such as CSA, IEC, IEEE, Industry Canada, AESO, WECC, and NERC.
Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications for this position are as follows:
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Telecommunications or Computer Engineering;
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer registered with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) or qualifies for registration with APEGA;
Minimum of 2 to 5 years of relevant experience;
Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities;
Technical knowledge and understanding of telecom design, operation, maintenance, performance, and equipment in a utility environment;
Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work in a team environment, positively influence others, and develop strong internal and external relationships;
Effective communication skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive customer outcomes;
Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage a wide variety of issues on multiple projects simultaneously;
Knowledge of ProjectWise, and Visio;
Experience with drawings for review, construction as-builts, and as-recorded;
Familiarity with Project Management and Construction related to telecom projects in electrical utility environment; and
Technical understanding of Telecom tower design and construction, antennas, fibre optics technology, Microwave radios, teleprotection and Network connectivity, MPLS systems, Power system elements such as relays, RTUs.
