Department Summary

Laboratory Services is the single point of contact for providing technical expertise in the areas of calibration, chemistry, nondestructive and material testing. We are committed to maintaining and strengthening our long-term working relationships by ensuring that professionalism, competence, confidence, and trust are demonstrated with every service we provide.

Our laboratory uses state-of-the-art technology and serves a diverse clientele in a wide variety of fields.  We perform both lab and field work and offer pick-up and delivery of equipment or any device that requires special handling.

Job Description/Responsibilities

Under limited supervision, all technicians must be able to work in a team environment planning daily work efficiently to meet established goals/metrics tied to Safety, Quality, Cost and Delivery.

The Calibration Technician will:

  • Perform calibration and repair activities relating to portable Measurement & Test Equipment (M&TE) in the field of metrology (the science of measurement).  
  • Evaluate test results in accordance with nationally accepted codes, instrument specifications, ISO/IEC 17025, 10CFR Part 21 Appendix B and requirements within Lab Services Quality System.
  • This activity may be in a laboratory environment or at customer locations.
  • Have a passion for technology, and a commitment for learning as they will be exposed to new measuring instruments that are becoming more sophisticated.
  • Use procedures and be given the right tools to verify the accuracy of a wide variety of instruments covering electrical, temperature, pressure, dimensional, force, torque, cable locators and gas detectors, etc.
  • Be able to communicate with vendors, customers, engineering staff and managerial personnel presenting solutions to issues as they arise with measuring instruments and test equipment.
  • Be required to document instrument work order status, parts ordering, and work with vendors on outsourced instruments which will require strong written and oral communication skills using information technology.  
  • Assist in training entry-level technicians, and perform miscellaneous duties as required.
  • Use Windows and Web based applications, statistical analysis tools and general mathematics daily.
  • Have excellent reasoning skills, and the ability to perform proceduralized tasks using basic hand tools and calibration standards to record electrical and physical quantities from customer's instruments.
  • Be required to have a working knowledge of electronic/electro-mechanical test systems and physics as it applies to measurement devices.
  • Be required to be dependable, highly organized, have self-discipline and able to work in both a team environment and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Need to remain flexible as overtime, occasional week-long travel (up to two times/year) and moderate overnight travel (up to two times/quarter) may be required. A Consumers Energy vehicle will be provided for use during such travel.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • At least three years of applicable experience
  • A two-year associate degree in the requisite scientific or technical field OR, 48 scientific or technical credit hours as measured on a semester basis. The 48 scientific or technical credit hours can be obtained through colleges, technical institutes, licensed apprenticeship programs, trade schools, military programs, etc.
  • Experience in lieu of education may be considered (7+ years)
  • Metrology aptitude.
  • Self-starter.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word.
  • Technical background.
  • Instrumentation background.

Essential Functions

  • Perform calibration and repair activities relating to portable M&TE in the field of metrology (the science of measurement). 
  • Work effectively in a team environment and emphasize healthy customer relations.
  • Strong attention to detail, the ability to follow procedures, and superior oral and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of the fundamentals of electronics, physics, and communication protocols used in automated data acquisition systems.
  • Critical thinking and the ability to apply innovative solutions to complex problems.
  • Aptitude for electronics, mechanical, math, technical writing ability and advanced knowledge of computer-controlled automatic testing equipment.
  • Under limited supervision, all technicians plan and perform work to calibrate, troubleshoot, and/or repair a variety of M&TE, using knowledge of mechanical and physical properties, electronic theory and electronic M&TE.
