Job Summary

The Engineer II will fill an important role in Electric Transmission - System Operations Planning, with responsibility for the following duties:

  • Perform, review and analyze detailed reliability, power flow and stability studies on the Electric Transmission (ET) System to minimize risk and maintain system Reliability
  • Provide professional interface on transmission line outage requests between System Operations Planning and Engineering for both upstream and downstream customers
  • Sequencing and coordinating long-term (planned) Electric Transmission (ET) equipment outages by undertaking a thorough review of requested outages to understand scope-of-work, clearances requested, switching required, and potential impact to the grid
  • For long-term planned outages, coordinating outage sequences with ET Project Managers; Coordinating and working with PJM on outage reliability sequencing and outage coordination
  • Developing, implementing and maintaining processes for transmission outage ticketing, both internally and externally
  • Provide engineering support, expertise and leadership to fellow team members
  • The successful candidate will effectively interface with all stakeholders, such as the System Operator, ET Construction and Operations, PJM's outage schedulers, ET Project Managers, Generation Operators, Electric Cooperatives, Interconnected Companies, Key Account Managers as well as the Regional Operating Centers.
  • It is preferred that the position will achieve PJM Transmission System Operator certification.  At a minimum the position will have or need to obtain a working knowledge of NERC and PJM policies and procedures
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experiences required for entry into this job include the following:

3+ years of relevant engineering experience within electrical transmission, distribution and/or generating stations (prefer experience within an operations or system protection in electric transmission)

Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; A master's degree can count as one year experience

  • Good working knowledge of PJM policies and procedures
  • Good Knowledge of substation equipment/operations, relay operations, and power station operations
  • Good Knowledge of field construction, switching and equipment
  • Knowledge of engineering theories and principles
  • Skilled in use of advanced techniques and modification and extension of theories, precepts and practices of the field and related sciences and disciplines
  • Leadership skills with proven ability to serve as team project lead
  • Oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing)
  • Personal computer skills
  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices
  • In depth knowledge of various computer applications, with the ability to manipulate personal computer applications and perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g. Matlab, Excel, etc.)
  • Equally effective working independently or in team environment
  • Decision making skills
  • Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks
  • Strong planning, organizational and project management skills

NOTE:  Military service members and veterans with ranks from E5-E9, W1-CW5, or O3-O6, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined (above).

Required: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA: 

 
For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met: 
 

  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or 
     
  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or 
     
  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a postgraduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or 
     
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or 
     
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.

Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description

Preferred: PJM Transmission Operator certification
