JOB OVERVIEW
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a results-driven Operating Engineer to join our team in the role of Thermal Operating Technician in our Atikokan, Ontario location.
Under the direction of the Chief Operating Engineer and supervision of the Thermal Operating Supervisor/Shift Engineer, the Thermal Operating Technician is responsible for carrying out all operating, monitoring, and reporting activities, common and auxiliary equipment and systems associated with large high-pressure boilers and turbo-alternator units to meet station procedural and regulatory compliance. This role will be primarily on a rotating shift basis.
When required, the Thermal Operating Technician will perform the function of Assistant Shift Engineer as defined by Operating Engineers Regulation.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Carry out operating and monitoring activities to ensure the safe and reliable operation of all assigned units, common and auxiliary equipment and systems. Includes but is not limited to all process systems, feed water, fuel, chemical, water treatment plant, emission control systems, boiler feed pumps, screens, fans, etc. Recognize abnormalities, inefficiencies and hazards. Analyze, troubleshoot, and take corrective action
- Perform all aspects of work protection code (WPC) activities to the level trained. When required act as controlling/issuing authority of assigned equipment
- Member of the Emergency Response Team (will be required to wear a Self Contained Breathing Apparatus at times) with training to include but not limited to, firefighting, confined space rescue, chemical spill response, and First Aid/CPR response
- Carry out a variety of measurements including testing of equipment, systems and processes to recognized standards and procedures
- Plan, control and execute all phases of unit start-ups, including pre-start checks of equipment and systems
- Ensure appropriate actions are taken during periods of unit or bulk electricity system emergencies, and proper integration of all phases of unit start-ups
- Inspect and maintain assigned emergency equipment
- Prepare reports and retain appropriate documentation for audit/reference purposes
- Use light hand tools to perform minor maintenance
- Accountable for the health, safety and well being of self and others, in accordance with technical/operating procedures and standards, and includes the development of technical/ operating solutions to problems.
EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION
- Must possess a 3rd class Operating Engineer (OE) Certificate valid in the province of Ontario as a minimum requirement,
- Candidates pursuing or that hold a 2nd class OE Certificate are highly desirable
QUALIFICATIONS
- Proficient in the use of standard office computer software (Excel, Word, and Outlook)
- Solid written/oral communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills and able to work in a team environment with other trades and operators
- Ability to work with all levels of the organization
- Must be able to work shifts or days as needed
