Position Summary

Washington Gas is thrilled to add five Service Assistants to our Operations team! Service Assistants contribute to the safety and reliability of our gas transportation systems. Join our team in installing large and exciting construction projections, where you'll play a key role in designating, fabricating, and installing piping, meters, regulators, and other essential devices. Dive into hands-on tasks, from investigating and fixing gas leaks to responding promptly to reports of escaping gas and malfunctions. Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Assists with the purging (with nitrogen) of all large, welded house lines on market enhancement and new business jobs before gas is introduced to the system.

  • Responsible for the overall safety of job site situations, including limited and restricted spaces.

  • Assists with and ensures the safe operation of gas utilization equipment; provides minor adjustments to and otherwise makes safe malfunctioning appliances and appliance conversions (propane).

  • Assists with the safe removal of mercury seal regulators from customer premises and assists the Safety & Environment team with mercury spill incidents.

  • Assists with the operation and maintenance of the "tank-truck" and "tube trailer".

  • Assists in the installation and maintenance of meters and regulators.

  • Uses special equipment (fire extinguisher, first aid, etc.)

  • Performs regular and scheduled maintenance/construction on company facilities and customer premises. Customer and company facilities are defined as but are not limited to gas mains, EMSL, services, risers, valves, shutoffs, meters, and regulators (operators/monitors).

  • Assist with the removal of meters, and turn-offs, conduct leak investigations, grade and detection surveys, and miscellaneous meter work.

  • Assists with the connection of houseline to meter build-ups, (copper, steel, corrugated steel, and extended meter supply lines), sets and adjusts regulator, and installs meters.

  • Assists with checks and verifying pressure on the "Big Joe" regulator. Changes regulator when necessary.

  • Assists with checking, cleaning, adjusting, and rebuilding monitor/regulators for compliance.

  • Assists with insulating meter build-ups, valve inspections, tightening, adjusting, and repairing leakage.

  • Maintains awareness of construction-related activities in areas of WG facilities for damage prevention purposes; or the many hazardous conditions normally found in new construction of large buildings and remodeling of old buildings, shopping centers, and projects.

  • Interprets company records and maintains the ability to read and interpret company records, including, but not limited to SRCs, quad maps, Smallworld, field notes, map book, etc.

  • Maintains ability to interpret Dispatcher's information when relayed verbally; maintains knowledge of Miss Utility laws and operation of One-Call Center.

  • Communicates effectively via Radio/CAD unit while upholding a high level of professionalism and using proper terminology while representing Washington Gas.

  • Maintains excellent rapport with customers and maintains the Company's positive reputation.

  • Operates power tools such as drills, cutters, saws, etc., and hand excavating tools.

  • Maintains awareness and follows proper procedures when excavating near other utilities.

  • Stocks and equips company vehicles, orders materials needed for daily activities, and secures and stores materials safely. Keeps vehicle clean and orderly,

  • Disposes of excess debris and materials properly and according to WGL policy and procedures, following all guidelines for returning damaged materials.

  • Maintains tools, equipment/instruments. Inspects, tests, and documents findings for CGI, fire extinguisher, PPE, bonding cables, Jerome meters, etc.

  • In addition to the activities described above, employees can be assigned to related business support and administrative activities (i.e., dispatch integration activities, peer safety observations, vehicle clean-out, cross-functional training activities, etc.)

Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities

  • High School Diploma/GED required.

  • Must have six (6) months as a Helper Mechanic or six (6) months of HVAC/plumbing experience, OR completion of a verified trade/workforce development program. Two (2) years of Military experience accepted in place of 6 months experience.

  • Must pass the ACT WorkKeys Test and pre-qualifying written and practical exam(s) as applicable.

  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record. CDL holders are subject to testing under federal highway regulations.

  • Must successfully complete all assigned training modules, qualifying exams, and field clearances including FMC, Flagger certification, and PPJ Mechanical upon hire.

  • Basic computer skills are required.
