Electricity Operations is responsible for the electrical transmission and distribution systems in the City of Edmonton, with a focus on safety, reliability, and innovative and practical solutions. Our employees look after electrical infrastructure as well as the underground and aerial distribution networks.

Brief Description

EPCOR Distribution & Transmission (D&T) is looking for an experienced Electrical or Civil Technologist graduate to fill one full-time position as an Engineering Technologist. This position is accountable for the design of overhead and underground distribution projects.

One (1) permanent full time position is available.

Reporting to the Manager - Customer Engineering Services, the Engineering Technologist will apply technical skill and experience in the design of overhead and underground distribution systems up to 25kV. The accountabilities of this position typically include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Completing detailed designs for overhead and underground projects such as 5kV, 15kV and 25kV primary line rebuilds, relocations and extensions, and primary line voltage conversions including the installation and replacement of single and three phase primary line equipment.
  • Completing detailed designs for overhead and underground secondary services.
  • Liaising with customers, contractors and project managers to deliver designs.
  • Coordinating work with project managers, drafters, field crews, contractors and customers for various projects taking place throughout the City of Edmonton.
  • Ensuring all designs are in compliance with Electrical Utility Regulations, the Canadian Electrical Code, and EPCOR Distributions Construction Standards.
  • Providing detailed cost estimates to customers, project managers, contractors and accounting staff to ensure project budgets are accurate and provided within the allotted project time frames.
  • Preparing, reviewing and marking for changes detailed structural and electrical drawings including schematics, profiles, site drawings, circuit layouts, Cadastral plans, etc.
  • Performing field visits to ensure design standards are met and are in compliance with the Alberta Electrical and Communication Utility Code, the Canadian Electrical Code, and EPCOR Distribution Construction Standards.
  • Reviewing Land Titles and Right of Way documents for preparation of easements. Preparing railway, pipeline and right-of way crossing drawings as required.
  • Providing technical assistance to project managers, contractors, junior employees, field crews and customers for the purposes of conforming to the Canadian Electrical Code, the Alberta Electrical and Communication Utility Code and EPCOR Distribution and Transmission's design standards.
  • Regularly reviewing design and drafting standards and templates and proposing relevant changes.
  • Preparing design and construction packages for Distribution design projects using required software including GE Electric Office, Microstation and IVARA.
  • Providing detailed estimates on work orders and provide variance explanations if required.
  • Review and process microgeneration and distributed generation applications.
  • Providing assistance to fellow employees with their projects when help is needed to ensure customers are dealt with in a timely manner.
  • Performing engineering calculations, such as:
    • Wire sag, tension and swing
    • Calculation of the most economic ruling span
    • Wire clearances
    • Pole selection based on calculated loadings (wind, snow/ice, equipment and conductors)
    • Guy and anchor calculation and analysis
    • Secondary wire sizing and loading
    • Load calculation to ensure proper transformer sizing and loading
    • Voltage drop calculations
Requirements

The successful candidate must possess the following qualifications:

  • 2-year diploma in Electrical or Civil Engineering Technology from a recognized technical institute.
  • Registered or eligible for registration as a technologist with A.S.E.T.
  • 5+ years of directly related experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of related work experience within Canada.
  • Broad knowledge of industry safety practices and familiarity with applicable safety regulations.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
  • Experience with SAG10, GE Electric Office and Microstation would be considered an asset.
  • Valid Alberta Driver's License, with no more than 6 demerits. A Driver abstract will be required.
  • Clearance on a security background check is required.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada. A copy of a valid work permit may be required.
  • Professional Licensee and Professional Technologist designations would be considered an asset. 

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to apply sound distribution design skills using established standards and to develop new standards. Self-motivated with the ability to adapt readily to changing requirements and priorities, this individual must possess good project management skills and a strong attention to detail. Good interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to liaise with other EPCOR departments, customers, developers and consultants are requirements of the Technologist, Engineering. Our best candidate will demonstrate initiative and possess the ability to work well in a team environment.

Hourly Rate: $40.19 - $47.94 per hour
Hours of Work: 7.5 hours per day, 37.5 hours per week
