ABOUT THE ROLE

TransAlta is hiring for a 1st Class Power Engineer to join our team as an Plant Manager in Ottawa. Reporting to the Director, North American Gas Operations, you will be accountable for the safe and reliable operation of the Ottawa Facility in accordance with TSSA regulations, ensuring all work performed complies with governing practices, codes, and regulations. This role will develop and implement operations and maintenance strategies within a 3-year window and manage to a business plan in alignment with the North American Gas Strategy. This role provides strategic direction to direct reports.

This is a full-time salaried, safety sensitive position. The successful candidate will be required to complete pre-employment testing. Relocation coverage and assistance will be considered for the right candidate.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Must create a safe work environment ensuring all safety practices and procedures are followed
  • Ensure the delivery of consistent equipment reliability, energy optimization and asset preservation
  • Develop, implement, and manage a 3-year business plan and delivering the agreed outcomes
  • Provide leadership for optimal performance, by selecting, developing and managing direct reports capable of producing the agreed deliverables
  • Assess and manage risks through the understanding of applicable legislation and regulations, ensuring all safety and environmental related issues are appropriately addressed, recorded, and reported using appropriate procedures
  • Commit to continuous improvement of plant financial performance through optimization
  • Provide strategic direction to direct reports and facilitates the technical development of the entire team
  • Ensure ongoing development of a positive, empowered, self-motivated work environment
  • Manage training and development, including ensuring that training needs are identified, appropriate training is implemented, and that the expected results are realized
  • Ensure employees adhere to established operating and maintenance standards, policies, and procedures
  • Sponsor and facilitate change through recognizing, initiating, supporting, and accepting responsibility for change management to ensure 'best practices' are utilized to support the business
  • Anticipate and proactively identifies and solves the most unique and complex problems, often employing ground-breaking methods and a comprehensive understanding of the regulatory and business environment
  • Operate within a complex day-to-day work environment with multiple competing priorities
  • Influence and develop strategy to address complex internal and external business and regulatory challenges
  • Be accountable for the development and administration of the Collective Agreement
  • Be accountable for the management of the plant cycle chemistry program
  • Consistent and high-quality performance is expected at this level

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

  • Ontario First Class Stationary Engineer's certificate or equivalent Interprovincial Certificate
  • 5+ years' experience in management of an industrial facility, including 3 years in a leadership role
  • Understanding of plant operations and maintenance functions in an industrial and/or electrical generating facility
  • Ability to create and manage plant operating and maintenance budgets
  • Capable of operating in a unionized environment and able to interpret union contracts as they apply to specific situations
  • Understanding of commercial contracts, including the customer contracts and all supply and delivery contracts with stakeholders
  • Strong leadership, coaching and interpersonal skills with a collaborative influential approach
  • Self- motivated and action oriented
  • Ability to meet tight timelines and adapt to changing priorities
  • Ability to work effectively in teams and influence others as well as full collaborations within the TransAlta Gas Fleet and across the company
