Summary

This position reports to the Substation Maintenance Engineering team within our Engineering & Design organization and based in Tualatin, Oregon at the Avery Operations Center with a hybrid work-schedule. This role is focused specifically on the substation maintenance program for all Portland General Electric-owned generation, transmission, and distribution substations and switchyards. As a substation maintenance engineer you will be assigned ownership of multiple substation apparatuses depending on how your skillset balances with the depth and breadth of knowledge of the existing team. For example, some of the apparatuses the team is responsible for are cables, capacitors, circuit breakers, lighting, switches, switchgear, and transformers. As an apparatus owner you will be responsible for operational and maintenance related decisions in partnership with peers, other engineering teams, the system control center, and labor team. You will assist in work order creation and management of our condition and time-based maintenance programs through our Maximo work management system. There will be regular visits to substations to support field crews across the PGE service area and occasionally reaching our generation plants across Oregon and into Washington.

*We're hiring for a position open to both intermediate and career level candidates. The level will be determined based on the successful applicant's qualifications, experience, and demonstrated skills during the interview process.

Career Level Summary

Level P2 - Intermediate -Substation Maintenance Engineer: Requires expanded knowledge and experience in own area; incumbents are still acquiring higher-level knowledge and skills. Builds knowledge of the company, processes, and customers. Solves a range of straightforward problems. Analyses possible solutions using standard procedures. Receives a moderate level of guidance and direction.

Level P3 - Career - Senior Substation Maintenance Engineer: Requires in-depth knowledge and experience. Uses best practices and knowledge of internal or external business issues to improve products or services. Solves complex problems; takes a new perspective using existing solutions. Works independently, receives minimal guidance. Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience.

Key Responsibilities

Substation Maintenance Engineer:

  • Maintains currency in state-of-the-art engineering practices and independently applies professional knowledge of engineering processes and standards to assignments/projects.

  • Applies knowledge of engineering solutions to resolve substation operations and maintenance engineering programs. Applies knowledge of codes and standards and applies engineering theories and concepts in expanding professional knowledge of maintenance engineering principles.

  • Prepares a variety of moderately complex engineering deliverables; leads smaller project teams.

  • Develops maintenance engineering solutions that meet technical requirements, all applicable codes, regulatory requirements and follow sound engineering practice.

  • Assigns tasks and coordinates with other internal/external team members on assigned projects; shares information and provides professional guidance in executing project tasks.

  • Provides complex design, construction, operation, maintenance or testing elements in support of substation maintenance engineering needs; contributes to capital or operations and maintenance budget and job estimates.

  • Shares current knowledge of latest technology and processes; may assist with mentoring, recognition and any corrective actions required.

  • Supports and develops training of other engineers and crews on operations and maintenance practices and requirements.

Senior Substation Maintenance Engineer:

  • Maintains currency in state-of-the-art engineering practices and provides guidance and direction on engineering processes and standards to colleagues when requested.

  • Supports substation improvements with extended knowledge of maintenance engineering principles and local codes and standards. Applies knowledge to investigate, identify and clearly define substation problems and deliver engineering improvements on proposed equipment and systems. Provides technical guidance and support to other engineers and contractors.

  • Prepares a variety of complex engineering deliverables for larger or multiple projects; coordinates multiple discipline activity.

  • Develops and provides quality assurance reviews of maintenance engineering solutions that meet technical requirements, all applicable codes, regulatory requirements and follow sound engineering practice.

  • Actively coordinates with other internal/external team members on moderately complex projects, including representing the team to interdepartmental and external (regulatory) stakeholders.

  • Plans, develops and coordinates projects with complex design, construction, operation, maintenance or testing elements in support of substation maintenance engineering projects; provides accurate capital budget and job estimates.

  • Serves as a technical specialist and provides consultation/guidance to project teams in a particular practice area; actively fosters knowledge management and provides mentoring; implements resource management strategy.

  • Develops and delivers training of other engineers and crews on operations and maintenance practices and requirements. Provides and coordinates updates on critical safety and reliability topics to operations personnel. Participates in industry-related events for the purposes of benchmarking and learning about best practices.

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Certifications          

Substation Maintenance Engineer: Requires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. ABET accredited engineering program or program accredited by an equivalent agency, preferred. Typically, two or more years in engineering.

Senior Substation Maintenance Engineer: Requires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. ABET accredited engineering program or program accredited by an equivalent agency, preferred. Typically, five or more years in engineering, or four years in engineering with a Professional Engineering (PE) license.
