WHAT YOU'LL DO

The Manager Safety provides leadership and oversight of all operational safety programs for Peoples Gas; Contributes to and executes Peoples Gas's five-year safety plan including activities that adds to team member, contractor and public safety and ensuring compliance with OSHA, FMCSA and PHMSA rules as well as corporate safety programs.  Supervises the Safety Professionals and support staff in the Peoples Gas Safety team.  Coordinates and communicates with Emera Corporate Safety and ensures consistency of safety programs.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities: 

  • Key contributor to the development and execution of the Peoples Gas Pipeline Safety Management
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of the Pipeline Safety Management System for Peoples Gas, including the key elements of safety risk management, leadership and commitment, stakeholder engagement, incident investigation and quality assurance safety planning. 
  • Acts as and demonstrates safety leadership through the promotion and support of a strong safety culture at Peoples Gas.  Committed to the guiding principles of Peoples Gas' Pipeline Safety Management System.
  • Responsible for the design, coordination and change management regarding new Peoples Gas safety activities, programs and initiatives.
  • Represents Peoples Gas in a leadership and subject matter capacity on safety related utility trade associations such as Southern Gas Association (SGA) and the American Gas Association (AGA) peer review teams.
  • Accountable to Director Peoples Gas Safety Management Systems and company senior management to ensure Safety programs comply with Federal (i.e., OSHA, PHMSA, FMCSA etc.), State (Florida Public Service Commission) and local regulations and standards.
  • Researches applicable laws, regulations, consensus standards, best practices, and published literature using internal and external resources to develop benchmarks for assessing an organization's safety performance and to support the evaluation of safety risk.
  • Leads the continued enhancement of the Peoples Gas safety data management system by prioritizing process automation needs and collaborating with systems support and information technology teams to implement potential solutions.  Seeks opportunities to enhance the analytical utilization of safety data to ensure proactive prevention of injury or incidents.
  • Enhances existing safety programs to meet changing or expanding business needs (e.g., renewable natural gas, fleet safety upfit) and regulatory requirements Oversee and/or conducts safety training as needed, such as Drug & Alcohol and Defensive Driving, for individuals or groups. 
  • Leads and coordinates the development of  the Peoples Gas inter-department safety committees.
  • Develops strategies for continuous improvement in team member safety.  Implements programs, processes, and tools to enhance field and office team member safe work mindsets and performance
  • Develops and manages a team of regional Safety Professionals and support personnel
  • Provides guidance to Safety Professionals regarding their respective incident investigations, safety program coordination, safety training and other safety related regional support.
  • Directs Administrative support in performance of communications and record retention for the maintenance of safety and health records, PHMSA drug and alcohol compliance for PGS and contractors, OSHA, and FMCSA (Commercial Driver Licenses) files for compliance.
  • All other duties as needed and as assigned by the department Director, such as, overseeing safety statistic reporting to Emera Corporate Safety and TECO Florida Operations Board

What We're Looking For

Must Haves:  

  • Bachelor's Degree in Safety or related field from a regionally accredited college/university
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) accreditation or qualified to obtain within 2 years
  • A minimum of eight years of related experience in the utility industry or related, with a minimum of two years of performing in a functional safety role consisting of progressively more complex assignments.
  • Minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience
  • Must be proficient in OSHA regulations; in addition, familiarity with PHMSA or FMCSA is preferred
  • Strong, effective written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Intermediate proficiency in MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint required.
